Overview

Muktinath (3,760 m) is a sacred pilgrimage site in Mustang District, revered by Hindus as an avatar of Vishnu and by Tibetan Buddhists as Chumig Gyatsa (108 water springs). The main temple complex features 108 carved bull-head water spouts, two pools, and an eternal flame of natural gas. Pilgrims come year-round -- the journey is now simplified by the Jomsom-Muktinath road, though most Annapurna Circuit trekkers walk the 12-km route from Jomsom.

Accommodation at Muktinath

Hotel Bob Marley (yes, really) is the most popular lodge in Muktinath -- the name amuses trekkers and the food, including excellent apple pie and yak steak, is genuinely good. Rooms NPR 700 to 1,200, solar hot water, rooftop Dhaulagiri views.

Hotel Muktinath View has the best location directly opposite the temple entrance -- rooms NPR 1,000 to 1,500 with heated common room (essential in winter when temperatures drop to -15 degrees Celsius at night). The sunrise view of Dhaulagiri from the rooftop is extraordinary.

Hotel New Mount View offers the most comfortable rooms in Muktinath at NPR 1,500 to 2,500 -- heated rooms, proper beds, and a restaurant serving Indian, Tibetan, and continental options.

Pilgrimage Logistics

The Muktinath temple complex is open from 6 am to 7 pm. The ritual involves bathing under the 108 water spouts (very cold, very sacred) and visiting the Jwala Mai fire spring. Most pilgrims arrive by shared jeep from Jomsom (NPR 500 to 800 per person) or by private vehicle hired in Kagbeni.

FAQ

Is Muktinath accessible without trekking?
Yes. Since 2010, a road connects Jomsom to Muktinath via Kagbeni. Private jeeps and shared vehicles travel the 18-km road. Flights from Pokhara to Jomsom (20 minutes, NPR 7,000 to 12,000 depending on season) make the entire journey possible in a single day from Pokhara.

What is the best time to visit Muktinath?
October, November, April, and May are the most comfortable months. Winter (December to February) is extremely cold with heavy snowfall at times. Monsoon months (July to September) bring rain but also green landscapes.

Can I hire horses in Muktinath to visit surrounding areas?
Yes. Horse hire is available from Muktinath for the Thorong La crossing direction and for visits to the Lupra Valley monasteries. Rates are approximately NPR 1,500 to 2,500 per day with a handler.
