Overview

The Langtang Valley trek (7 to 10 days round trip) is the closest major Himalayan trekking destination to Kathmandu -- the trailhead at Syabrubesi is just 117 km from the capital. The trail suffered catastrophic losses in the 2015 earthquake when an avalanche destroyed Langtang Village, killing 243 residents and trekkers. The village has been rebuilt and the teahouse system is fully operational again, with newer lodges often better than pre-earthquake facilities.

Syabrubesi to Langtang Village (1,470 to 3,430 m)

Syabrubesi has seven lodges at the trailhead (NPR 400 to 1,200 per room). The first day's lodges at Bamboo (1,960 m) and Rimche (2,400 m) are small single-lodge villages -- call ahead in peak season. Lama Hotel (2,470 m) has the most options on the lower trail (NPR 500 to 1,000).

Langtang Village itself was rebuilt after 2015 with approximately 15 new lodges of substantially better construction. Rooms NPR 600 to 1,200. The rebuilt village has a small memorial garden for earthquake victims.

Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m)

Kyanjin Gompa is the trek's high point and the most atmospheric location -- a monastery, cheese factory, and six lodges at the foot of the Langtang Glacier. Tserko Ri (4,984 m) is a day hike above the village offering extraordinary views. Rooms NPR 600 to 1,000, meals NPR 600 to 900. The local yak cheese made at the monastery factory (NPR 400 to 600 per block) is a must.
