Overview

Manang (3,519 m) is the principal acclimatisation stop on the Annapurna Circuit trek and sits in a wide glaciated valley surrounded by peaks including Annapurna III (7,555 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), and Tilicho Peak (7,134 m). Trekkers typically spend two nights here before the Thorong La crossing (5,416 m). The village has about 20 teahouses and lodges clustered in its main street and is surprisingly well-equipped with bakeries, a medical facility, and a mountain rescue organisation.

Accommodation Options

Hotel Yak (central Manang) is the most consistently recommended lodge -- warm rooms with wool blankets, good meals, and a common room with a wood-burning stove. NPR 800 to 1,500 per room. The dal bhat here is excellent value at NPR 700.

Gangapurna Guest House (north end of village with glacier views) has rooms from NPR 700 to 1,200 and a rooftop that offers outstanding views of Gangapurna Glacier in the morning. Cheaper than the central options and equally comfortable.

The Himalayan Medical Centre at Manang (run by the Himalayan Rescue Association, open October to November) provides altitude sickness consultation free of charge -- trekkers with any symptoms should stop here before attempting Thorong La.

Acclimatisation Hike

The recommended acclimatisation walk from Manang is to the Ice Lake (Kicho Tal) at 4,600 m -- a 6-hour round trip through alpine meadows with stunning glacier views. The principle is "climb high, sleep low" -- reach 4,600 m during the day then sleep at 3,519 m.

FAQ

How cold does it get in Manang lodges at night?
Temperatures at 3,519 m drop to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius in November and December. Most lodges provide wool blankets but not duvets -- bring a sleeping bag rated to -10 degrees Celsius. Wood stoves in common rooms provide good evening warmth.

Is wi-fi available in Manang?
Satellite internet (typically Ncell or NTC SIM cards at limited speeds) is available but expensive at NPR 200 to 500 per hour. Some lodges offer wi-fi included but speeds are very slow. Manage expectations accordingly.

What happens if I have altitude sickness in Manang?
The Himalayan Rescue Association clinic in Manang provides assessment and advice. Mild AMS symptoms (headache, fatigue) often resolve with one extra rest day. Severe symptoms (ataxia, confusion, HACE) require immediate descent and evacuation. The HRA can arrange helicopter evacuation from the nearby field.
