Lukla Accommodation: First Night on the Everest Trek
Lukla is the starting point for most Everest region treks and is where the adventure begins. A surprisingly lively village at 2,840 m with good guesthouses and the world's most dramatic airport.
Overview
Lukla (2,840 m) has one claim to world fame beyond its role as the Everest trek gateway: Tenzing-Hillary Airport, a 527-metre runway with a 12-degree uphill slope and a cliff drop at the lower end -- consistently rated among the world's most dangerous airports. The drama of landing here (small Twin Otter aircraft, mountain walls on three sides, one chance at the approach) is itself a Nepal travel highlight. The village behind the runway has over 30 lodges catering to trekkers arriving and departing.
Best Lodges in Lukla
Yeti Mountain Home Lukla is the most comfortable property -- wooden construction, double-glazed windows (rare at this altitude), and proper beds with good blankets. NPR 2,500 to 4,000 per room. The restaurant has the best coffee on the Everest route.
Buddha Lodge and Restaurant is the most popular mid-range option at NPR 1,200 to 2,000. Reliable hot showers, good dal bhat, and a social common room that fills with arriving and departing trekkers in late afternoon.
Sunrise Lodge is budget-friendly at NPR 800 to 1,200 -- basic but clean, well-managed, and convenient to the airport end of the village for early morning departure logistics.

Flight Logistics
Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla (20 to 25 minutes, NPR 15,000 to 22,000) operate only in the morning (6 am to 11 am) before mountain winds make the approach dangerous. Weather cancellations are frequent -- book a flexible return and carry one to two extra days of buffer in your schedule.
FAQ
Is it possible to walk to Lukla from Salleri or Jiri instead of flying?
Yes. The Jiri to Lukla trek (6 to 8 days) was the original approach before the airport opened in 1964. It adds significant trekking days but gives a more gradual acclimatisation and passes through traditional Sherpa and Rai villages.
What should I do if my Lukla flight is cancelled?
Wait in Ramechhap (an alternative airport 3 hours from Kathmandu by road, which operates EV flights to Lukla when Kathmandu is weathered out) or accept the delay at Kathmandu. Flight-share operators sometimes run extra seats in helicopters during weather windows -- expensive (USD 200 to 300 per person) but reliable.
How many lodges are there in Lukla?
Approximately 35 to 40 lodges of varying quality. The village is small enough to walk end-to-end in 10 minutes, so finding your lodge after arrival is simple.
