Overview

Lo Manthang (3,840 m) is the walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo, incorporated into Nepal in 1795 but retaining its own king until the abolition of Nepal's monarchy system in 2008. The city's white-washed walls enclose a medieval Tibetan urban landscape of four-storey mud-brick buildings, three major monastery complexes, and the royal palace -- largely unchanged since the 15th century. Reaching it requires either a 4-day walk from Jomsom or an 8-hour jeep journey on an unpaved road.

Accommodation Inside the Walls

Accommodation inside the Lo Manthang walled city is basic by trekking standards -- simple twin rooms with wool blankets in traditional Tibetan buildings. The Old Himalayan Guesthouse and Mona Lisa Guesthouse (both within the walls) charge NPR 600 to 1,200 per room and offer yak-meat thukpa (noodle soup), tsampa (barley flour), and Chang (millet beer) as their staple menu.

Outside the walls, the Lo Manthang Guesthouse and Om's Guest House have more comfortable rooms (NPR 1,000 to 2,000) with solar hot water and a wider menu. These are preferred by most tourists.

Why Lo Manthang is Worth the Journey

The morning light on the royal palace and surrounding peaks at 6 am is extraordinary. The Jampa (Maitreya) and Thugchen monasteries contain 500-year-old Tibetan murals being restored by the American Himalayan Foundation -- arguably the finest medieval Buddhist art accessible to visitors anywhere in the world.

FAQ

Is the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit worth the USD 500 cost?
For travellers with a genuine interest in Tibetan culture, Buddhist art, and high-altitude landscapes, overwhelmingly yes. The permit restricts numbers and preserves the area's authenticity far better than unrestricted zones. Book early for October and November.

How many days should I spend in Lo Manthang?
Minimum two nights to see the city, monastery murals, nearby Chhoser cave system, and the Luri Gompa cliff monastery (5 km from Lo Manthang). Three nights allows for the side trip to Lo Gekar, Nepal's oldest monastery.

Is trekking from Jomsom to Lo Manthang still viable despite the road?
Absolutely. The trek (4 days each way) passes through spectacular canyon landscapes, medieval villages, and high plateaus that the jeep road bypasses. Most serious trekkers walk at least one direction.
