Kathmandu Zoo: A Guide for Families
The Central Zoo in Kathmandu is Nepal's only zoo and a popular family outing. What to expect, which animals to see, and how to combine it with nearby sites.
The Central Zoo of Nepal, located in the Jawlakhel neighborhood of Patan (approximately 5 kilometers south of central Kathmandu), is Nepal's only zoo and a popular family destination. The zoo is modest in scale compared to major international zoos but houses a collection of animals significant to the Himalayan and South Asian region that children find genuinely engaging.
Getting There
The Central Zoo is in Jawlakhel, Patan. From Thamel, the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes by taxi. The fare is typically NPR 400-600. Alternatively, combine a zoo visit with a trip to Patan Durbar Square (15 minutes by taxi from the zoo) for a full-day Patan outing.
What to Expect
The zoo covers approximately 6.8 hectares and houses around 400 animals representing 100 species. The collection focuses on species native to Nepal and the Himalayan region.

Honest Assessment
The Central Zoo does not meet the standards of the best international zoos in terms of enclosure space and environmental enrichment. Some enclosures are small and dated. However, significant investment has been made in recent years to upgrade conditions, and the zoo's commitment to housing locally significant species gives it genuine conservation value. Families visiting with realistic expectations -- a modest regional zoo with fascinating native species -- will find it worthwhile.
Combining With Jawlakhel Area
After the zoo, the Jawlakhel neighborhood has several good restaurants and the Jawlakhel Handicraft Center, which sells Tibetan rugs and crafts made by Tibetan refugee communities. The Patan Dhoka area, 15 minutes walk, connects to Patan Durbar Square for an afternoon of heritage sightseeing.
