Overview

The journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara covers approximately 200 kilometres along the Prithvi Highway, which follows the Trishuli River west before climbing into the hills above Pokhara. The road is Nepal's main highway artery and is generally well-maintained though subject to landslides during monsoon season. The journey by road takes 6-8 hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and the type of service you choose.

Tourist Buses

Tourist buses are the most comfortable option for the Kathmandu-Pokhara route. They depart from the Tourist Bus Park near Thamel (on the Kantipath end) every morning, typically between 7 and 8 am. Seats are assigned, the buses have reclinable chairs, and some services include a lunch stop at a roadside restaurant around the midpoint. Air-conditioning is standard. Prices are higher than local buses but still very affordable. Book through your guesthouse or any travel agent in Thamel the day before. Sajilo and similar platforms can help you coordinate your Kathmandu transport to the bus park.

Deluxe and Express Tourist Buses

Several companies operate deluxe coaches with extra legroom, onboard entertainment, and faster schedules. These cost more but are noticeably more comfortable for a seven-hour journey. Check with your accommodation or a Thamel travel agent for current operators.

Local Buses

Local buses depart from Gongabu Bus Park (New Bus Park) in northern Kathmandu. They are significantly cheaper than tourist buses and take the same highway but can be extremely crowded and do not have assigned seating. Luggage goes on the roof. Journey times can stretch to nine hours with frequent stops. Recommended only if you are very comfortable with Nepali bus travel or are on a tight budget.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Night Buses

Night buses are available on this route but not generally recommended for safety reasons. Driver fatigue and reduced visibility on the winding mountain road make night travel a higher-risk option.

By Car or Jeep

Private cars and jeeps can be hired in Kathmandu for the Pokhara route. This allows you to stop at points of interest (the Trishuli rapids, Manakamana cable car) and travel at your own pace. Prices are significantly higher than bus travel.

By Air

Yeti Airlines, Buddha Air, and Shree Airlines operate multiple daily flights between Tribhuvan International Airport and Pokhara Regional Airport. The flight takes approximately 25 minutes and offers Himalayan panoramas on clear days. Fares are reasonable and advance booking is recommended during peak season.
