Kathmandu to Chitwan: Bus, Car, and Flight Options
Chitwan National Park is the most popular wildlife destination in Nepal. This guide covers all transport options from Kathmandu, including tourist buses, private vehicles, and flights.
Overview
Chitwan National Park in the Terai lowlands is one of Nepal's most visited destinations, known for one-horned rhinoceroses, Bengal tigers, elephants, and jungle safaris. It lies approximately 150 kilometres south of Kathmandu and is reachable in 4-6 hours by road depending on the route and transport type. Most travellers target Sauraha, the main gateway town on the northern edge of the park.
Tourist Buses
Tourist buses are the most popular option and depart daily from the Tourist Bus Park near Thamel. The journey to Sauraha via the Prithvi and Narayangadh highways takes roughly five to six hours. Buses typically depart at 7 am and arrive in the early afternoon. Most accommodation in Sauraha can arrange an onward pickup from the Sauraha bus stop.
Local Buses
Local buses from Gongabu New Bus Park serve Bharatpur and Narayangadh, from where you catch a further local vehicle to Sauraha. This is slower and more complicated but significantly cheaper.
Private Car or Jeep
A private vehicle from Kathmandu to Chitwan takes four to five hours on the Prithvi Highway and then south towards Bharatpur. This is the most flexible option โ you can stop at the Manakamana cable car shrine en route and time your arrival at the park for the best safari slots. Private hire is considerably more expensive than bus travel.

By Air
Yeti Airlines and Buddha Air operate flights from Tribhuvan International Airport to Bharatpur Airport, the nearest airfield to Chitwan. The flight takes about 20-25 minutes. From Bharatpur, a taxi to Sauraha takes about 30 minutes.
What Awaits in Chitwan
Chitwan National Park covers more than 900 square kilometres of riverine forest, grassland, and oxbow lakes. Activities include jeep safaris, elephant-back safaris (now increasingly restricted on animal welfare grounds), canoeing on the Rapti River, and walking safaris with guides. The one-horned rhinoceros population has recovered significantly due to conservation efforts and sightings are common. Tiger sightings occur but are not guaranteed.
Planning Your Stay
Most visitors spend two to three nights in Chitwan. Sauraha has a wide range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to upscale jungle lodges. Booking your lodge in advance is recommended during October-November peak season, when wildlife sightings are excellent and the park is at its most visited.
