Kathmandu to Chitwan by Bus: Routes, Operators, and What to Expect
A practical guide to travelling from Kathmandu to Chitwan National Park by bus — routes, operators, times, and tips for a smooth journey.
Chitwan National Park is one of Nepal's premier wildlife destinations and a popular stop on the classic Nepal itinerary after Kathmandu and Pokhara. The bus journey from Kathmandu is straightforward and affordable.
Distance and Travel Time
Kathmandu to Sauraha (the main tourist hub within Chitwan) is approximately 155–175 km depending on the route. The journey typically takes 4.5–7 hours by tourist bus and up to 8 hours by local bus, accounting for road conditions and traffic.
Routes
The primary route goes via the Prithvi Highway to Mugling, then south along the Narayangadh–Mugling Road to Bharatpur, and then east to Sauraha. An alternative route via the BP Highway exists but is used less frequently for Chitwan-bound traffic.
Tourist Bus Options
Most tourist buses for Chitwan depart from Thamel in Kathmandu. Several established operators — including Prithivi Express and various Thamel-based travel agencies — run daily morning services. Departure is typically between 7 AM and 8 AM. Prices range from NPR 700 to NPR 1,200 per person. The bus will often drop tourists directly at their lodge or at a central point in Sauraha.

Local and Express Buses
Local buses to Narayangadh (Bharatpur) depart from Gongabu New Bus Park and Kalanki throughout the morning for NPR 300–450. From Bharatpur, a separate local bus or jeep covers the remaining 20–25 km to Sauraha for NPR 100–200. This two-leg approach is significantly cheaper but adds time and complexity.
Night Bus Option
Night buses to Chitwan are available, departing Kathmandu around 8–9 PM and arriving early morning. These are less common than on the Pokhara route but exist for budget travellers who want to save accommodation costs.
What to Expect on the Journey
The road from Kathmandu descends dramatically from the Himalayan foothills into the Terai flatlands. The temperature increases noticeably as you descend — Chitwan sits at around 150 metres above sea level compared to Kathmandu's 1,400 metres. Dress accordingly and carry water.
The road through the Narayangadh–Mugling section passes alongside the Trisuli and Narayani rivers, with forest on either side. Wildlife sightings (particularly birds and monkeys) are possible near the park periphery.
Booking
Book tourist buses through Thamel guesthouses or travel agencies. One day's notice is usually sufficient outside peak season. During Dashain, Tihar, and major trekking seasons, book two to three days ahead.
Arriving in Sauraha
Sauraha's main street is compact and walkable. Most lodges are clustered near the park edge or along the riverside. Confirm with your lodge whether they arrange pickup from a central drop-off point or whether you need to arrange your own transport from the bus stop.
Alternative: Fly to Bharatpur
Yeti Airlines, Buddha Air, and Shree Airlines operate 25-minute flights from Kathmandu to Bharatpur Airport. From the airport, Sauraha is a 30–40 minute taxi or jeep ride. This is significantly faster and costs around USD 100–150 one-way, compared to under USD 10 by bus.
For most travellers, the tourist bus is the right call — affordable, direct, and without the faff of a mid-journey connection.
