Kathmandu to Biratnagar by Bus: The Eastern Nepal Journey

A practical guide to travelling from Kathmandu to Biratnagar, Nepal's second-largest city, by bus — routes, night services, and what to expect.

📅 April 4, 2026👤 Priya Gurung

Biratnagar, Nepal's second-largest city and the commercial hub of the eastern Terai, sits approximately 585 km from Kathmandu by road. The journey is one of Nepal's longest overland routes, making night sleeper buses the most popular option.

Routes

Two primary road options exist:

Prithvi Highway + East-West Highway: The most common route. Buses travel south from Kathmandu via Mugling, through Narayangadh, and then east along the Mahendra Highway (East-West Highway) through the Terai to Biratnagar. Total road distance: approximately 560–590 km.

BP Highway (Banepa to Sindhuli): A more direct but slower mountain road connecting Kathmandu to the eastern Terai via Sindhuli. Some services use this route. It is more scenic and avoids the Mugling bottleneck but involves more challenging mountain terrain.

Travel Time

By night bus, expect 12–15 hours. Day buses on the same route may take 14–18 hours depending on stops. The long journey makes overnight travel the preferred choice for most passengers.

Night Sleeper Buses

Most passengers choose night sleeper buses that depart from Gongabu New Bus Park between 4 PM and 8 PM. Modern sleeper coaches have semi-reclined or fully reclining seats, sometimes with bunk-style berths on premium services. These arrive in Biratnagar between 5 AM and 10 AM.

Prices range from NPR 1,200 to NPR 2,000 for sleeper services. Basic non-sleeper night buses cost NPR 700–1,000.

Booking Tickets

Book in advance at the bus park or through Thamel travel agencies. During public holidays and festivals, demand spikes sharply and buses sell out days ahead.

Comfort and Safety

For a 12+ hour journey, comfort matters. Choose established operators with good reviews. Carry a neck pillow, light blanket (AC buses get cold), earplugs, and your own snacks and water. The bus will typically stop once or twice at dhaba restaurants along the East-West Highway.

Food Breaks

Night buses typically stop for a 30-minute dinner break around 9–11 PM at a roadside dhaba. Dal bhat, roti, and fried rice are commonly available. Carry some biscuits and snacks regardless, as timing of breaks can shift.

Flying Instead

Domestic flights from Kathmandu to Biratnagar take approximately 55 minutes. Buddha Air and Shree Airlines operate multiple daily flights. Prices typically range from USD 100–180 one-way. Given the 12+ hour bus journey, flying is strongly worth considering for time-sensitive travellers.

What to Do in Biratnagar

Biratnagar is the gateway to eastern Nepal's trekking regions, including the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. It also connects to Ilam (famous for tea gardens), Taplejung, and routes into Sikkim across the Indian border at Kakarbhitta (80 km west of Biratnagar on the East-West Highway).

Arrival in Biratnagar

Night buses typically terminate at Biratnagar Bus Park near Trafficchowk. Auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, and taxis are available for onward travel within the city and to the airport.

The Kathmandu to Biratnagar journey is substantial but manageable. A good sleeper bus turns the long night into a reasonable overnight transit, and you arrive ready to explore eastern Nepal.
