All Ways Kathmandu to Pokhara Compared
There are five different ways to travel between Nepal's two biggest cities. This complete comparison covers time, cost, comfort, and best use case for each option.
Kathmandu to Pokhara is Nepal's most-travelled intercity route. With 200km between them, the two cities are close enough for options but far enough that the wrong choice wastes a full day.
Option 1: Tourist Bus
The most popular choice for independent travellers. Departs 6am to 8am from Thamel-area pickup points, arrives 6 to 8 hours later. Cost: NPR 800 to NPR 1,500. Air-conditioned coaches are available on premium services. The Prithvi Highway route is mostly good tarmac with a river gorge stretch near Mugling that is scenic but occasionally disrupted by landslides in monsoon.
Option 2: Local Bus
Departs Gongabu Bus Park hourly from 5am. Same route, same time, lower cost: NPR 300 to NPR 500. More stops, more crowding. Good option if you are on a very tight budget and do not mind the conditions.
Option 3: Domestic Flight
Buddha Air and Shree Airlines fly Kathmandu to Pokhara in 25 minutes. Fares: NPR 4,500 to NPR 8,000 one way. Plus 30 minutes each end for airport procedures -- total door-to-door around 2.5 hours. Best for time-poor travellers or anyone who struggles with long bus journeys on mountain roads.

Option 4: Private Car or Taxi
Full private car hire costs NPR 10,000 to NPR 16,000 one way. Door-to-door, departure on your schedule, stops where you want. Journey time is 5 to 6 hours driving; slower if you stop at Manakamana or riverside dhabas.
Option 5: Motorbike or Bicycle
Motorbike: 4 to 5 hours, fully flexible, fuel cost NPR 500 to NPR 700. Bicycle: 2 to 3 days, one of Nepal's classic touring routes.

FAQ
Which is the most scenic? The bus route through the Trishuli and Marsyangdi gorges is genuinely beautiful. The flight gives Himalayan aerial views on clear mornings.
What about night travel? Night buses exist and are cheaper, but daytime is strongly recommended for the first-time traveller -- the gorge scenery is the main appeal.
Is there a direct train? No -- Nepal has no rail line connecting Kathmandu and Pokhara. A proposed rail project exists in long-term planning but is years from realisation.
