Travel Tips
Kathmandu to Lumbini Transport Options
Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, is 300km south-west of Kathmandu. Here are all the ways to get there with timing, cost, and tips for each.
Lumbini draws pilgrims and visitors from across the world. Getting there from Kathmandu involves a long journey regardless of which transport you choose.
By Tourist Bus (Overnight)
Night buses from Gongabu Bus Park depart around 7pm to 8pm and reach Bhairahawa (the nearest town to Lumbini, 22km away) by early morning -- roughly 9 to 10 hours. Tickets cost NPR 700 to NPR 1,000. From Bhairahawa, a local bus or shared jeep covers the 22km to Lumbini for NPR 100 to NPR 200. Day buses also run but turn a 9-hour journey into a full day sacrifice.
By Private Car
Door to door is the most comfortable option: NPR 18,000 to NPR 25,000 for a private car or jeep, taking 6 to 8 hours via the fast Narayangadh-Butwal corridor. You can stop at Chitwan en route if combining both destinations.
By Domestic Flight
Lumbini Airport (Gautam Buddha International Airport) near Bhairahawa has flights from Kathmandu on Shree Airlines, Buddha Air, and others. Flight time is 35 minutes; fares are NPR 5,500 to NPR 9,000 one way. The airport is 8km from central Bhairahawa and 30km from the main Lumbini garden complex -- budget another NPR 500 to NPR 700 for the taxi onward.

By Combining Chitwan
Many travellers stop in Chitwan (5 to 6 hours from KTM by bus) for 2 nights of wildlife safaris, then continue to Lumbini (2.5 to 3 hours from Sauraha/Bharatpur). This breaks the long journey and adds a major attraction.
At Lumbini: Getting Around
The Maya Devi Temple (exact birthplace), the Ashoka Pillar, the monastery zone, and the World Peace Pagoda are spread over 4km. Bicycle hire at Lumbini entrance gates costs NPR 200 to NPR 300 per day -- the best way to cover the pilgrimage sites at your own pace.
FAQ
How much time should I spend in Lumbini? Minimum one full day to see the Maya Devi Temple complex and explore the international monastery zone. Two days allows the World Peace Pagoda and outlying sites.
Is there accommodation in Lumbini itself? Yes -- several guesthouses and a few mid-range hotels operate within or near the Lumbini Development Trust zone. Book ahead during Buddha Purnima (April/May) when thousands of pilgrims arrive.
Can I cross into India from Lumbini? Yes -- the Sunauli/Belahiya border crossing to Gorakhpur (India) is 6km from Bhairahawa and is a well-used overland crossing for onward travel to Varanasi, Agra, or Delhi.
