Kathmandu Day Trips Guide: Best Excursions from the City
Kathmandu Valley and its surroundings offer world-class day trips. This guide covers Bhaktapur, Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Pharping, and other destinations within easy reach of the city.
Overview
Kathmandu sits at the centre of a valley that is dense with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, medieval cities, forest monasteries, and viewpoints facing the high Himalaya. The valley's size means that most of these destinations are reachable within 30-90 minutes from Thamel, making them ideal for day trips or overnight excursions.
Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur is the best-preserved medieval city in the Kathmandu Valley and should be high on any itinerary. Its Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, and Pottery Square form a connected network of temples, courtyards, and workshops that give a vivid sense of traditional Newari urban life. Entry for foreign visitors is USD 15 (payable in equivalent NPR). The city is car-free in its core, making it peaceful and easy to walk. Plan a full day. Try juju dhau โ the thick, sweet yoghurt for which Bhaktapur is famous โ before leaving.
Nagarkot
Nagarkot is a ridge-top village 32 kilometres east of Kathmandu at 2,175 metres elevation, famous for its sunrise views of the Himalayan range including Everest on clear days. Most visitors stay overnight at one of the ridge hotels to wake before dawn. Day trips are possible but require an early start and a taxi willing to navigate the winding road in the dark. October, November, and December offer the best visibility.
Dhulikhel
Dhulikhel is a small Newari town 30 kilometres east of Kathmandu with excellent mountain views and a charming, little-visited old town. Unlike Nagarkot, which is primarily a viewpoint, Dhulikhel has a genuine community and interesting temples to explore. It is also the starting point for the popular Namobuddha day hike.

Pharping
Pharping, 20 kilometres south of Kathmandu, is a pilgrimage town sacred to both Hinduism and Buddhism. The Dakshinkali Temple, where live animal sacrifices are performed on Tuesdays and Saturdays, attracts large local crowds. Nearby are several Buddhist cave sites associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is said to have meditated here in the 8th century. The Asura Cave is the most visited.
Panauti
Panauti is a small, very traditional Newari town 32 kilometres southeast of Kathmandu that sees far fewer visitors than Bhaktapur. Its confluence of two rivers (plus a mythical third) makes it auspicious for Hindu pilgrimage. The medieval temples and stone water conduits (dhungedhara) are in excellent condition.
FAQ
Which day trip is best for a single day?
Bhaktapur is the most rewarding for a single full day. It combines architecture, living craft traditions, and good food in a compact, walkable area.
Do I need a guide for these day trips?
Most destinations are manageable independently. For Pharping's cave sites and Buddhist history, a guide adds significant depth.
