Kathmandu Airport to City: All Transport Options Explained

How to get from Tribhuvan International Airport to Kathmandu city centre — taxis, prepaid counters, apps, buses, and costs.

📅 April 7, 2026👤 Sita Maharjan

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu for the first time can feel overwhelming. Multiple transport options exist, and knowing your choices in advance saves money and stress. Here is a complete breakdown.

Prepaid Taxi Counter (Inside the Terminal)

The safest and most straightforward option for first-time visitors is the prepaid taxi counter located inside the arrivals hall, immediately after clearing customs. You state your destination, pay a fixed rate, and receive a ticket. A licensed taxi then takes you to your hotel.

Typical fares from the prepaid counter (2024):

  • To Thamel: NPR 700–900
  • To Patan / Lalitpur: NPR 800–1,000
  • To Bhaktapur: NPR 1,500–2,000
  • To other Kathmandu valley destinations: NPR 700–1,500

These fares are higher than metered rates but eliminate negotiation and risk entirely. For tired, jet-lagged arrivals carrying luggage, the premium is worth it.

Regular Metered Taxis

Outside the terminal, licensed taxi drivers wait at the designated taxi rank. You can negotiate or request the meter. Expect to pay NPR 500–700 to Thamel by meter, but drivers often push for NPR 700–1,000 as a flat rate. Do not accept rides from unlicensed drivers or touts who approach you inside the arrivals hall.

Ride-Hailing Apps

Apps can be used to book a ride from the airport. The pickup point is outside the arrivals building near the taxi rank. This requires a Nepali SIM or working internet to operate. If you have a local SIM ready, apps can offer competitive pricing and the comfort of a known fare.

Hotel Pickup

Many hotels in Kathmandu offer airport pickup for a fixed fee. Confirm this during booking. The convenience is high — a driver holds a board with your name, and you go directly to your hotel. Prices range from NPR 800–1,500 depending on location and hotel.

Local Micro-Bus (Budget Option)

A micro-bus stop exists outside the airport perimeter. Local buses and micros run to various parts of Kathmandu city for NPR 20–50. However, these do not permit large luggage and involve walking with bags to the stop. This is not recommended for most international arrivals.

Airport Location

Tribhuvan International Airport (IATA: KTM) is located in Gauchar, approximately 6 km east of Thamel (the main tourist district). The drive to Thamel takes 20–45 minutes depending on time of day and traffic. The airport road through Kathmandu can be heavily congested during morning and evening rush hours.

SIM Cards at the Airport

Nepal Telecom and Ncell both have kiosks inside the international arrivals area. Buying a local SIM immediately after clearing customs is highly recommended — it gives you internet access for maps, communication, and ride-hailing from the moment you arrive. Ncell tourist SIMs with data are available for NPR 300–500.

Tips for Arrival

  • Have some Nepali rupees (NPR) ready. There are currency exchange counters and ATMs inside the terminal.
  • The prepaid taxi counter is the best option for most travellers on their first visit.
  • Do not exchange more money than you need at the airport — rates are less favourable than in the city.
  • Confirm your hotel address is written in Nepali script or has GPS coordinates, as some drivers may not know English hotel names.

Getting from the airport to your hotel in Kathmandu is straightforward once you know the system. The prepaid counter is the most reliable choice, with ride-hailing apps a close second for tech-comfortable travellers.
