Kathmandu Airport Guide for First-Timers
Tribhuvan International Airport can be overwhelming on arrival. This first-timer guide walks you through immigration, baggage, taxi touts, and getting to your hotel.
Overview
Tribhuvan International Airport (IATA: KTM) is Nepal's only international airport, located about five kilometres east of central Kathmandu. It handles millions of passengers annually despite being relatively small by regional standards. The single international terminal was expanded in recent years but can feel congested during peak arrival periods. For first-time visitors, knowing what to expect at each stage makes the experience significantly smoother.
On Arrival: Visa
Most nationalities obtain a visa on arrival. After leaving the jetway, follow signs to the visa counter before immigration. Automated kiosks allow you to fill in your arrival details electronically; after completing the kiosk process, proceed to the visa payment counter. Fees are USD 30 (15 days), USD 50 (30 days), or USD 125 (90 days), payable in major foreign currencies. Credit cards are now accepted but carry cash as backup. After paying, join the immigration queue to get your visa stamp.
If you obtained an e-visa before travel, join the separate e-visa lane at immigration.
Baggage and Customs
Baggage carousels are just past immigration. The terminal is small enough that you will hear announcements clearly. Customs in Nepal uses the red (declare) / green (nothing to declare) lane system. Trekking equipment, camping gear, and electronics for personal use pass through without issue. Commercially large quantities of goods and items exceeding customs allowances should be declared.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Getting to the City
Prepaid taxi counters operate inside the terminal just after customs. Use these rather than accepting offers from touts outside. The fixed rate to Thamel or central Kathmandu is posted on the counter. The drive takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic and time of day; afternoon rush hour (4-7 pm) can stretch it to an hour.
Some hotels offer pickup services โ book this in advance through your accommodation. Sajilo and other ride-hailing apps function at the airport for those already holding a local SIM.
Getting a SIM Card
SIM cards from Nepal Telecom and Ncell are available at booths in the arrivals hall. Bring a copy of your passport photo page and passport. A tourist SIM with a data package is straightforward to obtain and gives you connectivity from the moment you leave the terminal.
Departure Tips
Arrive at least three hours before international flights. Security screening before check-in, check-in, immigration, and security at the gate can collectively take 90 minutes during busy periods. The departure lounge has duty-free shops, restaurants, and currency exchange. Cell phone signal is good throughout the terminal.
FAQ
Is the airport Wi-Fi reliable?
Free Wi-Fi is available in the terminal but is slow and unreliable. Buy a SIM on arrival for consistent connectivity.
Are there ATMs at the airport?
Yes. ATMs from Himalayan Bank and other institutions are in the arrivals hall. Rates and fees are comparable to those in the city.
