Kathmandu Air Quality and Pollution: What Travellers Need to Know

Kathmandu has significant air quality challenges, particularly in the dry season. Understanding when pollution peaks, how to protect yourself, and how to check real-time data is essential for a comfortable visit.

Overview

Kathmandu's air quality is a genuine concern for visitors, particularly in the spring months of March, April, and May and the post-monsoon winter period of December through February. The city sits in a bowl-shaped valley with limited air drainage, and a combination of vehicle emissions, brick kiln smoke, construction dust, open burning, and the increasing volume of diesel trucks on the valley's roads creates periodic episodes of severe air pollution. For travellers with respiratory conditions, or those spending extended time in the city, understanding and managing this risk is important.

When Is Air Quality Worst

Spring (March-May) is the most problematic period. Agricultural burning in the surrounding hills, low humidity, and the valley's natural tendency to trap air under temperature inversions produce the highest particulate matter readings of the year. Air quality in late April can be poor enough to reduce visibility to a few kilometres and cause respiratory irritation even in healthy individuals.

Winter (December-February) brings cold temperature inversions that trap vehicle and cooking exhaust close to the ground, particularly in the mornings. Readings typically improve by midday as temperatures rise.

The monsoon season (June-September) is the cleanest period. Rain washes particulate matter out of the atmosphere and the valley's air quality improves markedly.

October and November โ€” the peak tourist season โ€” generally have good air quality thanks to post-monsoon rains and stable atmospheric conditions.

How to Check Air Quality

Several apps and websites provide real-time AQI (Air Quality Index) data for Kathmandu. IQAir, AirVisual, and the Nepal Department of Environment's own monitoring station data are reliable sources. An AQI below 100 is generally acceptable for healthy adults. Between 100-150, sensitive groups should limit outdoor exertion. Above 150, everyone benefits from reducing time outdoors.

How to Protect Yourself

A well-fitting N95 or KN95 respirator mask effectively filters particulate matter (PM2.5) at concentrations found in Kathmandu. Standard surgical masks provide limited protection against fine particles. For extended stays during spring, it is worth investing in a quality mask. Symptoms of exposure include eye irritation, a dry throat, coughing, and headaches. If you experience severe symptoms, particularly if you have pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, consult a doctor.

Avoid peak traffic hours (7-9 am and 5-7 pm) for outdoor walks during high-pollution periods. Morning haze typically clears by mid-morning in winter, making the afternoon the best time for outdoor sightseeing.

The Longer-Term Picture

Nepal's government and international organisations have been working to address Kathmandu's air quality. Policies to phase out old diesel vehicles, reduce brick kiln emissions, and expand electric vehicle use are in progress. The long-term trend may improve, but the valley's geography means air quality will remain a seasonal challenge for the foreseeable future.

FAQ

Should I be worried about Kathmandu's pollution?
For a stay of a week or less during October-November, air quality is generally not a significant concern for healthy travellers. For longer stays, or visits in March-May, taking protective measures is advisable.

Do hotels in Kathmandu have air filtration?
Some upscale hotels have air filtration in rooms. If this is a priority, ask specifically about room air quality before booking.
