Overview

Choosing where to stay in Kathmandu is one of the most consequential decisions you make before arrival. The city is large, traffic is unpredictable, and a poorly located hotel can add significant dead time to every outing. The following zones represent the main accommodation clusters and what they offer.

Thamel Core

The central lanes of Thamel around the main Thamel Chowk junction are the most convenient for trekking logistics, gear shopping, and evening dining. The trade-off is noise โ€” generators, traffic, and music from nearby bars can make sleeping difficult. This zone suits travellers on short visits who prioritise access to services over atmosphere.

Paknajol (Northern Thamel)

The northern extension of Thamel towards the Paknajol area is quieter, with a better selection of mid-range guesthouses at fair prices. The lanes are narrower and more residential. Restaurants and shops are still within easy walking distance of the main Thamel strip but the noise level is substantially lower.

Lazimpat and Baluwatar

These northern residential neighbourhoods are home to embassy buildings, NGO offices, and upscale restaurants. Hotels here tend to be larger, have gardens, and offer more space than Thamel alternatives. This zone is better for longer stays and for business travellers. It is 15-20 minutes by taxi from the airport and 10-15 minutes from central Thamel.

Patan (South of the River)

Staying in Patan means immediate access to one of the most beautiful urban environments in the valley. Boutique hotels in restored Newari courtyards are available here at reasonable prices. The Kopundol and Jawalakhel sub-areas have the best restaurant scene in Kathmandu outside Thamel. The trade-off is the Bagmati River bridge crossing, which adds 15-20 minutes to any journey into central Kathmandu.

Boudhanath

Staying near Boudhanath suits visitors whose primary interest is Tibetan Buddhism. The neighbourhood is calm, the rooftop cafes are excellent, and the morning and evening koras are accessible on foot. Getting to the old city or Durbar Square requires a 20-30 minute taxi ride.

Luxury Hotels

Kathmandu's international luxury hotels โ€” Hyatt Regency, Dwarika's, Soaltee Crowne Plaza โ€” are spread across different parts of the city. Dwarika's, a heritage hotel in the Battisputali area, is consistently ranked among the best hotels in Nepal for its preservation of traditional architecture and craftsmanship.

FAQ

Are there good mid-range hotel options in Kathmandu?
Yes. The NPR 3,000-8,000 per night range (roughly USD 22-60) offers very good quality in all the main zones, including boutique properties with courtyard gardens and good services.

Is it safe to stay in budget guesthouses?
Generally yes. Standard precautions apply: use a padlock on your room door if one is provided, and keep valuables in the hotel safe or on your person rather than left in the room.
