Overview

Jomsom (2,720 m) sits astride the Kali Gandaki River in Mustang District and serves as the administrative, transport, and supply hub for the entire upper valley. The world's deepest gorge -- between Annapurna (8,091 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) -- runs through this valley, creating famous afternoon winds that ground flights and make afternoon trekking unpleasant. Mornings are calm and clear.

Accommodation Options

Hotel Mustang Holiday is the most comfortable mid-range option -- 30 rooms from NPR 1,500 to 3,000, reliable hot water, heating, and the best restaurant in town. The apple brandy produced in nearby Marpha is served here and is worth trying.

Hotel Thakali Guest House is a reliable budget option at NPR 800 to 1,500 with clean rooms and Thakali cuisine (the local ethnic group's cooking -- considered among Nepal's finest regional cuisines -- featuring buckwheat pancakes, fried potatoes, and meat curries).

Om's Home Restaurant and Lodge is popular with trekkers for its warm atmosphere and NPR 700 rooms. The owner provides reliable weather and flight information for the daily Pokhara-Jomsom route.

Upper Mustang Logistics

Jomsom is the gateway for Upper Mustang permits. The Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 per 10 days) and ACAP permit (NPR 3,000) must be arranged before arrival, but Jomsom's Area Conservation Office verifies them here. Jeeps to Lo Manthang depart from Jomsom at 7 am (NPR 3,000 to 5,000 per person, 6 to 8 hours).

FAQ

Are flights reliable from Pokhara to Jomsom?
The Jomsom airport is one of Nepal's most challenging -- afternoon winds make it inaccessible after 11 am. Morning flights (7 am to 9 am) have a 70 to 80 percent completion rate in good weather. Budget an extra day in your itinerary for weather delays. The flight takes 20 minutes and costs NPR 7,000 to 12,000.

Can I drive from Pokhara to Jomsom?
Yes. The Beni-Jomsom road is open (with some rough sections). The drive takes 6 to 8 hours from Pokhara (jeep hire NPR 15,000 to 20,000). This road gives trekkers the option of trekking one direction and driving the other.

What is the food specialty of Jomsom?
Thakali cuisine from the Thak Khola region is exceptional -- buckwheat bread (dhindo), mutton curry, and lentil soup with fermented vegetables are the staples. Marpha apple brandy and apple cider are the local drinks.
