India to Nepal Honeymoon Guide for Indian Couples

Everything Indian couples need to know about honeymooning in Nepal, including visa-free entry, border crossings, currency, and the best experiences.

๐Ÿ“… January 17, 2026๐Ÿ‘ค Anil Shrestha

Nepal is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations for Indian couples, and for good reason. Indian citizens enter Nepal visa-free, the Nepali Rupee is closely tied to the Indian Rupee (though they are not the same currency), many Nepalis speak Hindi, and the cultural and religious connections between the two countries make Nepal feel simultaneously familiar and excitingly different.

Visa and Entry -- The Big Advantage

Indian citizens do not require a visa to enter Nepal. You need only a valid Indian passport or, in some cases, a government-issued ID. The border is open and the process is significantly simpler than international travel to most destinations.

Entry points for Indian travellers:

  • By air: Fly directly into Kathmandu from major Indian cities. IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet all operate frequent routes from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and other cities.
  • By rail and road (Raxaul/Birgunj border): Train from Delhi or Patna to Raxaul (Bihar), then cross on foot or by rickshaw to Birgunj, Nepal. Onward bus to Kathmandu takes 6-7 hours.
  • By road (Sunauli/Bhairahawa border): Popular for travellers from UP and Varanasi. Cross at Sunauli and take a bus to Pokhara (5-6 hours) or Kathmandu (8-9 hours).
  • Other crossings: Kakarbhitta (West Bengal), Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar for travellers from different regions of India.

Currency Notes for Indian Couples

The Indian Rupee (INR) and Nepalese Rupee (NPR) are officially linked at 1 INR = 1.6 NPR, but Indian currency is not accepted for transactions in Nepal. You must exchange INR to NPR.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Important restriction: Indian notes of INR 500 and INR 2,000 denominations are NOT accepted in Nepal. Bring INR 100 notes or smaller denominations for border exchange, or exchange at official bank counters in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

ATMs in Nepal dispense NPR and accept Indian bank cards. This is the most convenient option for most Indian travellers.

Flights from India to Kathmandu

Direct flights from India to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) are available from:

  • Delhi (DEL): 1.5-2 hours, multiple daily flights
  • Mumbai (BOM): 2.5-3 hours, daily flights
  • Kolkata (CCU): 1 hour, multiple daily flights
  • Bengaluru (BLR): 3-3.5 hours, daily flights
  • Chennai (MAA): 3-3.5 hours, select flights
  • Hyderabad (HYD): direct flights via Air India and IndiGo

Book domestic Indian carriers (IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India) for competitive fares. Nepal Airlines also operates on some routes.

Language

Nepali and Hindi share a common root language (both are derived from Sanskrit). Most Nepalis in tourist areas speak or understand Hindi. In Pokhara and Kathmandu's tourist districts, communication is rarely a problem for Hindi speakers.

Menus, signage, and hotel communication in the tourist area are predominantly in English and often also in Hindi.

Indian-Friendly Food Options

Nepal's food culture overlaps significantly with North Indian cuisine, including dal bhat (very similar to dal chawal), sabji, roti, and paneer dishes. Vegetarian options are widely available.

However, Nepal also has its own distinct food culture. Momos (steamed dumplings filled with vegetables or meat) are Nepal's most popular street food and a must-try. Newari cuisine includes dishes like chatamari (rice flour crepe), wo (lentil pancake), and choila (spiced meat) that are quite different from anything commonly found in India.

Pilgrimage and Religious Sites

Nepal's religious sites have deep significance for Hindus and include locations not available in India:

Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu: One of the holiest Shiva temples in the world. Indian Hindus are permitted to enter the main temple complex (non-Hindu foreigners are not allowed into the innermost sanctum). The temple sits on the banks of the Bagmati River, which flows to the Ganga. For devout Hindu couples, a visit here is deeply meaningful.

Muktinath Temple: In the Mustang region at 3,710 metres altitude, Muktinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams sacred to Vaishnavas. The temple complex has a flame that burns from natural gas seeping through the stone, a combination of fire, air, and water sacred in Hindu tradition. Helicopter tours from Pokhara reach Muktinath in 30 minutes.

Janakpur: In the Terai (southern plains), Janakpur is the birthplace of Sita from the Ramayana. The Janaki Mandir is an ornate 20th-century temple. Accessible by bus from Kathmandu (8-10 hours) or domestic flight.

Booking Travel Within Nepal

Indian couples visiting Nepal will find ride-booking and inter-city transport services in Kathmandu and Pokhara straightforward to use, with booking flows similar to familiar Indian ride-hailing apps. Sajilo operates reliable cab services within Kathmandu and Pokhara that are easy to navigate.

Practical Tips for Indian Couples

  • Book your international flight to Kathmandu from India well in advance. October and March prices can spike significantly as Indian holiday seasons coincide with Nepal's best weather.
  • Carry smaller denomination INR notes (INR 100 or below) for border area exchange if crossing by land.
  • Nepal has a petrol/vehicle entry restriction at some border crossings for Indian-registered vehicles. Check current rules if you plan to drive.
  • Mobile roaming from Indian carriers (Airtel, Jio, Vi) works in Nepal but at international rates. A local NCell SIM is more economical for a stay of 5 days or more.
  • Diwali, Holi, and other festivals shared between India and Nepal are excellent times to visit for the celebration overlap, but accommodation will be harder to book.
