Ilam Tea Estate Stays: Overnight in Nepal's Tea Country

Ilam in far eastern Nepal is the heart of the country's tea industry, with sprawling estates carpeting the hills at 1,200 to 2,100 m. Estate stays and eco-lodges here offer a unique agritourism experience.

Overview

Ilam District in Province 1 of eastern Nepal is the Darjeeling of Nepal -- rolling hills covered in tea bushes at elevations of 900 to 2,100 m, with misty mornings, red panda habitat in adjacent forest, and a thriving orthodox tea production industry. The Ilam tea brand is increasingly recognised internationally for quality comparable to Darjeeling at significantly lower prices. Agritourism stays on working tea estates are available for travellers willing to make the journey to this undervisited region.

Estate Accommodation

The Ilam Tea Agritourism Project, managed by local cooperatives, offers homestays on working tea estates from NPR 2,000 to 4,000 per person including meals and a guided estate walk. The experience includes a dawn walk through the tea rows, a visit to the processing factory, and tea tasting of first-flush (March to April) and second-flush (May to June) harvests.

Kanyam Tea Estate (16 km from Ilam Bazaar on the ridge above the valley) has a small lodge at NPR 3,000 to 5,000 with valley and Kanchenjunga views on clear days. The Kanyam lake and surrounding forest are excellent for red panda and bird spotting.

Ilam Bazaar itself has several hotels at NPR 1,500 to 3,000 including Hotel Himalayan Cloud and Hotel Green Hill.

Tea Tourism

The best time to visit is March to April (first flush, small leaf tea with delicate flavour) or October to November (second flush, fuller-bodied). Factory tours are available Monday to Saturday and cost NPR 200 to 500 per person. Fresh first-flush tea purchased directly from estates costs NPR 1,200 to 2,500 per 100g.

FAQ

How far is Ilam from Kathmandu?
Approximately 800 km by road (14 to 16 hours) or a one-hour flight to Bhadrapur Airport (Chandragadhi, in Jhapa District, 55 km from Ilam). From Bhadrapur, buses run to Ilam in 2.5 hours.

Is the tea grown in Ilam organic?
Several cooperatives in Ilam have organic certification. Ask specifically for certified organic estates when booking estate stays. The Shree Antu Organic Tea brand from Ilam is one of Nepal's most internationally recognised.

Can I buy Ilam tea directly from estates online?
Yes. Several Ilam tea cooperatives and estates ship directly to international customers. Prices are significantly lower than through importers. The Ilam Tea Association website lists certified producers.
