Heritage Hotels Kathmandu: Staying in Living History
Kathmandu's heritage hotels occupy former Rana palaces, Newari merchant houses, and century-old courtyards. These properties offer accommodation as a cultural experience in itself.
Overview
Nepal's Rana oligarchy (1846 to 1951) built dozens of opulent European-style palaces in Kathmandu that are now being converted into heritage hotels with varying degrees of authenticity and care. Simultaneously, traditional Newari merchant homes (bahals and courtyards) have been restored as boutique properties that offer a completely different but equally historic atmosphere. Both traditions produce excellent heritage accommodation.
Rana Palace Properties
Gokarna Forest Resort occupies a former Rana hunting lodge in 70 acres of old-growth forest 10 km from Thamel. The lodge rooms (NPR 14,000 to 22,000) offer a unique forest escape within the city limits, with a 9-hole golf course, spa, and wildlife walking trails through the sal forest -- peacocks and deer are resident on the grounds.
Hotel Shanker (Lazimpat) is a partially converted Rana palace with 94 rooms. The facade and public areas retain original Italianate architecture and ornate plasterwork. Rates from NPR 10,000. The garden restaurant is one of Kathmandu's most pleasant outdoor dining spaces.
Newari Heritage Properties
Dwarika's Hotel and Kantipur Temple House (described in other entries) are the gold standard for Newari heritage stays. The Baber Mahal Revisited complex in Teku -- a converted Rana stable block turned into shops and restaurants -- doesn't offer accommodation but is worth a dinner visit for its heritage atmosphere.
