Overview

Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) is a rocky peak above the Gokyo village in the Everest region that offers one of Nepal's supreme photography experiences -- a 360-degree panorama that includes Everest (8,848 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Makalu (8,485 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), and Ngozumpa Glacier (Nepal's largest glacier) with the turquoise Gokyo Lake below. For serious mountain photographers, this view surpasses even Kala Patthar.

The Approach

The standard route reaches Gokyo via Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machermo, and Gokyo village (5 to 6 days from Lukla). The Gokyo Ri summit is reached in 2 to 3 hours from the village, following a steep trail of loose rock. The pre-dawn climb (4 am departure from Gokyo) requires a headlamp, crampons in icy conditions (October to November), and warm layers (temperature at -20 degrees Celsius possible in October).

Composition Strategies

Foreground: Include Gokyo Lake in the composition from positions 50 to 100 m below the main summit for the turquoise lake-and-glacier-and-peaks triptych. From the true summit, the lake disappears below the ridge.

Mountain focus: From the main summit cairn, shoot Everest in the north with a 100 to 200 mm lens. Swing left for Cho Oyu, right for Makalu. The full panorama with a 24 mm lens captures all four eight-thousanders in a single frame -- an extraordinary image if exposure is well-managed.

The three Gokyo Lakes below reflect the peaks at dawn -- pre-climb shots from the valley trail at 5 am can capture these reflections before ascending.

FAQ

Is Gokyo Ri harder to climb than Kala Patthar?
Both are non-technical (no ropes or climbing equipment needed in good conditions) but Gokyo Ri is 190 m higher and the approach trail is more technical with loose rock. Fitness and acclimatisation are essential for both.

Can I do the Three Passes trek to combine Gokyo Ri with the Everest Base Camp route?
Yes. The Three Passes route crosses Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La, connecting the Gokyo and Khumbu valleys in a challenging 3-week circuit. All three passes are above 5,000 m and require a high fitness level.

How many people are typically at Gokyo Ri at dawn?
Far fewer than Kala Patthar -- typically 20 to 50 trekkers in peak season compared to 200-plus at Kala Patthar. This makes Gokyo Ri a significantly more peaceful photography experience.
