Getting to Pokhara from Kathmandu: All Your Options
A practical guide to every way of travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara — tourist bus, local bus, private car, and domestic flight — with times, costs, and tips.
Overview
Pokhara is approximately 200 kilometres west of Kathmandu by road — in terms of straight-line distance it is closer — but Nepal's mountain terrain means the journey takes considerably longer than the distance suggests. The Prithvi Highway connecting Kathmandu and Pokhara is one of Nepal's most important arterial roads. There are three main modes of travel: tourist bus, public bus, and domestic flight. Private car or motorbike are additional options.
Tourist Bus
Tourist buses (also called "express" or "deluxe" buses) depart from the tourist bus park near Thamel in Kathmandu and arrive at the tourist bus park near Lakeside in Pokhara. The journey takes 6 to 8 hours under normal conditions. Road quality and traffic cause significant variation — a journey that takes 6 hours on a good day can stretch to 9 or more after heavy rain, road maintenance, or traffic congestion at Mugling junction.
Buses typically depart early morning (around 7:00-8:00 am) and arrive in Pokhara by early afternoon. Evening departures are also available on some services. Seats are bookable through your Thamel guesthouse, online booking services, or at the tourist bus park. Seats near the front of the bus have better views of the Trisuli River gorge section; rear seats experience more road vibration.
Public Bus
Government and private public buses cover the same route at lower fares and with more frequent departures from Kathmandu's main bus terminals (Gongabu or Old Bus Park). Journey times are similar to tourist buses but stops are more frequent. Seats are less comfortable and air conditioning is not standard. Recommended for budget-conscious travellers or those comfortable with local transport conditions.

Domestic Flight
Several Nepali airlines (Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, Shree Airlines, and others depending on current operator status) fly the Kathmandu-Pokhara route. The flight takes approximately 25-30 minutes and gives aerial views of the Himalayan foothills. This is the fastest option by far. Flights depart from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport domestic terminal. Arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes before departure.
Flights are subject to mountain weather — delays and cancellations occur, particularly in the monsoon months and during winter valley fog. Do not book a tight connection out of Pokhara on the same day as an inbound flight.
Private Car or Taxi
A hired private car or taxi covers the journey in 5-7 hours and allows stops en route (Manakamana cable car is a popular stop near Mugling, and the Trisuli River gorge is scenic). Cost is significantly higher than bus options but the flexibility and comfort can justify it for small groups.
Motorbike
Motorcyclists make the Kathmandu-Pokhara run regularly. The Prithvi Highway is paved throughout. A full day is needed for a comfortable journey with stops. Adequate experience on Nepali roads is important — the highway is busy with trucks and buses and requires confident riding.
FAQ
Q: What is the most comfortable option?
Tourist bus or private car for road travel; domestic flight for speed and comfort.
Q: Can I take a night bus?
Night buses are available but not recommended. The Prithvi Highway is winding and heavily trafficked by trucks at night. Daylight road travel allows you to see the scenery and is safer.
Q: Is the road ever closed?
Landslides during monsoon (June-September) occasionally close sections of the Prithvi Highway. Check conditions before departing during monsoon, and add extra travel time.
Q: How far in advance should I book the tourist bus?
During peak season (October-November and March-April), book 2-3 days in advance. Outside peak season, same-day or next-day booking is usually possible.
