Free Wi-Fi in Nepal: Where to Connect Without Burning Through Data
Free Wi-Fi is surprisingly widespread across Nepal. Here is where to find reliable free internet connections in cities, on trekking routes, and in between.
Nepal has better free Wi-Fi coverage than many travelers expect, particularly in major tourist centers. With a bit of planning, you can minimize your data usage by relying on free connections for heavy tasks like uploading photos or downloading offline maps.
Kathmandu Wi-Fi Hotspots
Guesthouses and hostels: Almost all budget guesthouses in Kathmandu now offer free Wi-Fi, though speeds and reliability vary considerably. Ask about speed before committing to a property if internet is important to your trip.
Cafes in Thamel: Dozens of cafes offer free Wi-Fi to customers. A cup of tea or a snack (NPR 50-150) typically buys you a couple of hours of access. Popular choices among travelers and digital nomads include cafes around Thamel Chowk and the Lazimpat area.
Nepal Telecom public hotspots: Nepal Telecom has installed public Wi-Fi in several areas of Kathmandu including Ratna Park and parts of the Thamel area. These are free but require SMS registration with a Nepal number.

Coffee shops and fast food chains: International-style coffee shops in Kathmandu (in Lazimpat, Jhamsikhel, and Thamel) offer reliable free Wi-Fi alongside their standard menu.
Pokhara Wi-Fi
Pokhara's lakeside area has dense free Wi-Fi coverage through guesthouses, restaurants, and cafes. The bandwidth can be slow during peak hours when many travelers are online simultaneously, but it is generally adequate for messaging and email. For video calls and uploads, early morning or late evening connections are faster.
Wi-Fi on Trekking Routes
This is where things get more variable. On major trekking routes:
- Everest Base Camp route: Teahouses to Lukla and Namche Bazaar typically have paid Wi-Fi (NPR 100-500 per hour or per day). Above Namche, connectivity becomes expensive and unreliable.
- Annapurna Circuit: Teahouses in lower sections often have Wi-Fi included in the room rate. Higher sections have limited and paid connectivity.
- Langtang: More limited Wi-Fi availability overall.
Satellite Wi-Fi (including Starlink, which some teahouses have recently installed) is appearing on popular routes and can be surprisingly fast but is usually priced at a premium.
Practical Tips
- Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before leaving Kathmandu to reduce data dependency on the road.
- Download route information, trekking guides, and entertainment before heading to remote areas.
- Use Wi-Fi for large uploads and downloads; use mobile data only for essential navigation and messaging.
- VPNs are commonly used in Nepal without legal restriction.
