Free Things to Do in Pokhara: Enjoying the Lake City on Zero Budget
Pokhara is stunningly beautiful and many of its best experiences are free. Here is how to enjoy the lake city without spending on entry fees or guided tours.
Pokhara is one of Nepal's most beautiful cities, and you do not need to spend heavily to enjoy it. The Annapurna range rising above Phewa Lake is a view that belongs to everyone.
Walking the Lakeside Promenade
The 4-kilometer lakeside promenade running along Phewa Lake is free and one of the finest walks in Nepal. Morning brings calm reflections of the mountains on the water; evenings bring warm light on the peaks. Simply walking this path at different times of day rewards you with endlessly changing scenery.
Sunrise Viewpoints Without the Fees
Sarangkot is the famous sunrise viewpoint above Pokhara and charges a small entry fee. However, several trails approach the ridge from slightly different angles and offer equally spectacular mountain views without any ticket. Ask locals at your guesthouse about the trail from Kaskikot village โ it is less known and completely free.
Phewa Lake Swimming and Shoreline
Swimming in Phewa Lake near the public shoreline areas is free. The water is cleanest in the post-monsoon months (October-November). Avoid areas near boat moorings. Beaches near the World Peace Pagoda approach trail are popular with budget travelers.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
World Peace Pagoda Hike
The hike to the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) on the southern ridge above Phewa Lake is free. The trail takes 45-60 minutes each way from the southern lakeshore. Views of the lake, the city, and the Annapurna range from the pagoda are outstanding. The pagoda itself is a Buddhist monument and there is no entrance fee.
Seti River Gorge Viewpoints
The Seti River runs through Pokhara underground in places before erupting into dramatic gorges. The gorge viewpoints near the old market area are free to access and are easy to miss on tourist maps โ follow local signage toward Seti Gorge from the bazaar area.
Old Bazaar Exploration
The old Pokhara Bazaar predates the tourist lakeside strip by centuries and gives a genuine window into Newari merchant culture. Wandering the streets, peeking into temples, and watching commerce costs nothing.
Begnas and Rupa Lakes
About 15 kilometers east of Pokhara, Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake are less visited and largely free to access from the shoreline. A local bus from the main bus park costs NPR 50-80. The lakes are tranquil, the surrounding hills are hikeable for free, and the crowds are almost nonexistent compared to Phewa Lake.
Devi's Falls Exterior
The cave and pool complex at Devi's Falls charges an entry fee, but the viewpoint from the road above the falls is free. You can get a decent look at the waterfall during monsoon season without entering the paid area.
