Free Things to Do in Kathmandu: A Budget Traveler's Guide

Kathmandu is full of extraordinary experiences that cost nothing. Here are the best free activities, sites, and cultural encounters the city offers.

๐Ÿ“… October 18, 2025๐Ÿ‘ค Anil Shrestha

Kathmandu charges entrance fees for many of its most famous sites, but a surprising number of the city's best experiences are completely free. Here is how to fill your days without spending a rupee on entry tickets.

Wander Thamel's Backstreets

The labyrinthine streets of Thamel, Asan, and the old city neighborhoods cost nothing to explore and reward slow walkers. Pause to watch a potter at work in Bhaktapur Road, observe pigeons circling stupas, or simply sit in a courtyard and watch daily life unfold. The city itself is the attraction.

Morning Prayers at Swayambhunath Exterior

While the main stupa area at Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) charges an entry fee of NPR 200 for foreigners, the exterior pathways and the approach route up the 365 steps are free. Arrive at sunrise to see monks performing morning rituals and light incense alongside locals.

Boudhanath Kora (Circumambulation)

Walking the outer kora (circumambulation path) around Boudhanath Stupa is free. The entrance fee applies only to climb to the stupa base itself. Early mornings before 7 am are the best time โ€” locals spin prayer wheels and chant mantras as the city wakes up.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Pashupatinath Ghats

Non-Hindus cannot enter the main Pashupatinath temple, but the ghats (riverside platforms) along the Bagmati River are freely accessible. You will witness cremation ceremonies, sadhus meditating under trees, and pilgrims performing rituals. Approach with quiet respect.

Durbar Squares (After Hours or Side Entrances)

Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares charge entry fees during daytime hours. However, locals and hotel guests in the surrounding neighborhoods can sometimes access these squares via residential side lanes, especially early morning or late evening. Ask at your guesthouse about current access rules.

Garden of Dreams (Free at Dusk)

The Garden of Dreams near Kaiser Mahal has a small entry fee, but the streets and public gardens surrounding it are free to walk through. The neighborhood is one of the most pleasant for an evening stroll.

Free Museums

Several embassies and cultural centers in Kathmandu host rotating exhibitions that are free to the public. Check the Nepal Tourism Board notice board or local listings.

Markets and Bazaars

Asan Bazaar, Indra Chowk, and the vegetable markets along New Road cost nothing to browse and offer a sensory immersion in everyday Kathmandu life that no ticketed attraction can replicate.

Sunrise Viewpoints

Several hilltops near Kathmandu โ€” including Nagarjun Hill perimeter, Kirtipur village, and points along the Shivapuri ridge โ€” offer sunrise views over the valley without entrance fees. Research the specific access points before heading out.
