Family Accommodation in Nepal: From Budget Guesthouses to Jungle Lodges
A guide to finding the right family accommodation in Nepal across all budgets, covering Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and trekking routes.
Choosing the right accommodation is critical for a successful family trip to Nepal. Children need reliable sleep, and parents need the confidence that their accommodation is safe, clean, and has appropriate facilities. Nepal has a wide spectrum of options -- from trekking tea houses to comfortable boutique hotels -- and families can find excellent value at every budget level.
Kathmandu
Budget (USD 20-50/night for a family room)
Guesthouses in Thamel offer family rooms with private bathrooms at reasonable rates. Look for properties with enclosed courtyards away from the main nightlife strip. Guesthouses in the Lazimpat neighborhood (a short taxi ride from Thamel) offer quieter environments better suited to families.
Mid-Range (USD 60-120/night)
Kathmandu has several reliable mid-range hotels in Thamel and Lazimpat with air conditioning, hot water, Wi-Fi, and on-site restaurants. Ask for rooms on upper floors away from street noise.
Upper Mid-Range (USD 120-250/night)
Hotels in the Maharajgunj district (north of Thamel) are quieter, more spacious, and more polished. The Yak and Yeti Hotel has large rooms, good restaurant options, and a garden. Dwarika's Hotel is a heritage property with exceptional architecture and child-friendly grounds.

Pokhara
Budget (USD 20-45/night)
Lakeside has excellent budget guesthouses within walking distance of Phewa Lake. Family rooms typically include two beds, private bathroom, and breakfast. Check that room windows face away from the main street for noise.
Mid-Range (USD 50-120/night)
The lakeside strip has several comfortable mid-range hotels with swimming pools that children value highly. Begnas Lake Resort, 15 km from the main Lakeside area, is quieter and set on the shore of a secondary lake -- ideal for families who want genuine relaxation.
Luxury (USD 150+/night)
The Pavilions Himalayas and Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge offer luxurious experiences with mountain views, exceptional food, guided activities, and the kind of space and tranquility that makes a family holiday truly restorative.
Chitwan
Accommodation in Sauraha ranges from budget guesthouses to comfortable wildlife lodges. For families, lodges that include safari packages are worth the premium -- the logistics of organizing separate guides and transport are taken care of.
- Budget: Guesthouses in central Sauraha with garden areas. Confirm they are fully fenced, as wildlife occasionally enters the village.
- Mid-Range: Inland Safari Resort, Chitwan Gaida Lodge -- comfortable rooms, enclosed gardens, pool.
- Splurge: Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge, Barahi Jungle Lodge -- exceptional wildlife experiences with highly trained naturalist guides.
Trekking Tea Houses
For families on the Ghorepani Poon Hill or Langtang Valley treks, accommodation is in tea house lodges. Standards have improved dramatically in recent years on popular routes. Expect simple but clean rooms, shared or private bathrooms, menus with surprisingly varied food, and no heating in rooms -- warm sleeping bags are essential above 2,500 m.
Family rooms are available at most tea houses on popular routes -- book with your guide in advance during peak season (October, November, March, April).
