Down Jacket for Nepal Weight Guide

A down jacket is essential for evenings and early mornings above 3,500 metres. Choosing the right fill power and weight saves grams without sacrificing warmth.

Overview

Above 3,500 metres on standard Nepal trekking routes, evening temperatures drop to near freezing even in October. A down jacket is not optional โ€” it is the critical insulation layer for teahouse dinners, early morning starts before sunrise, and rest stops on cold ridges. The question is not whether to bring one but which weight and fill power to choose.

Fill power measures down loft โ€” the volume one ounce of down occupies. 600 fill power is adequate entry-level warmth. 700-750 fill is the most practical range for Nepal trekking: excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, compresses to a small stuff sack, and handles temperatures from zero to minus ten degrees Celsius in combination with a fleece mid-layer. 800+ fill power is used in expedition jackets for higher mountaineering where every gram matters more than cost.

For a standard trekking jacket (not mountaineering), look for 150-250 grams of total jacket weight with 700+ fill power. The Arc'teryx Cerium SL, Rab Microlight Alpine, and Patagonia Down Sweater all hit this weight range with excellent field performance. Budget alternatives from Decathlon (Forclaz range) provide 80-90 percent of the warmth at 30 percent of the price โ€” worth considering for one-time use.

Water-resistant down treatment (DWR or hydrophobic down) is worth the slight premium in Nepal, where sweat condensation inside pack pouches and unexpected rain can partially wet even stored down. Wet down loses 70-80 percent of its insulating capacity.

Store the jacket in a dry bag inside your pack, not compressed for weeks on end โ€” down is a natural product and extended compression permanently reduces loft.

FAQ

Q: Do I need a down jacket for the Annapurna Base Camp route?
A: Yes. ABC sits at 4,130 metres and evenings are cold year-round. A 700+ fill down jacket is required.

Q: Can I use a synthetic insulated jacket instead of down?
A: Synthetic insulation retains warmth when wet (down does not) but is heavier and bulkier for equivalent warmth. For Nepal's generally dry conditions, down is the better choice. If trekking in monsoon, synthetic has advantages.
