Dolakha Traditional Guesthouses: Off-the-Beaten-Path Nepal
Dolakha District east of Kathmandu has traditional stone guesthouses near the Charikot bazaar and the sacred Bhimeshwor Temple. An undiscovered gem for cultural travellers.
Overview
Dolakha District, accessed via the Sindhuli Highway 4 hours east of Kathmandu, is among Nepal's most culturally intact hill districts with a high proportion of traditional stone architecture, Newari temples, and pre-earthquake streetscapes that survived better than the Kathmandu Valley. The district headquarters at Charikot sits at 1,900 m with views of Gauri Shankar (7,134 m) to the north and is the starting point for the Rowaling Valley trek.
Accommodation in Charikot
Gauri Shankar Hotel is the most comfortable option in Charikot -- 20 rooms from NPR 1,500 to 3,000 with mountain views and a restaurant serving Newari set meals. The rooftop has a direct view of Gauri Shankar on clear mornings.
Traditional homestays are available through the Dolakha Tourism Development Committee (contact through the district office) at NPR 1,000 to 1,500 per person including meals. These put you directly in the homes of Newari farming families in medieval-style stone buildings.
The Bhimeshwor Temple area at Dolakha Bazaar (4 km below Charikot) has one small guesthouse (NPR 800 to 1,200) near the sacred Bhimeshwor Mahadev temple -- one of Nepal's most architecturally distinctive temples.

The Rowaling Valley Trek
From Charikot, the Rowaling Valley trek (8 to 12 days) leads to Tsho Rolpa glacial lake (4,580 m) and the Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755 m) connecting to the Khumbu Valley. This remote route has minimal teahouse infrastructure and is partly a camping trek.
FAQ
How do I reach Charikot from Kathmandu?
Buses depart from Koteshwor bus park in Kathmandu at 7 am daily (NPR 400 to 500, 4 to 5 hours). The road via Sindhuli is scenic but winding. Private taxi hire costs NPR 5,000 to 7,000.
Is Dolakha worth visiting for cultural tourism?
Absolutely. The Bhimeshwor Temple at Dolakha Bazaar -- with its extraordinary bronze and terracotta decoration -- is one of Nepal's finest examples of early Newari temple architecture. The annual Chaitra Dashain festival here draws thousands of pilgrims.
What is the best time to visit Dolakha?
October to December for clear Gauri Shankar views and pre-monsoon hiking conditions. The Chaitra Dashain festival (March/April) brings spectacular celebrations to the Bhimeshwor Temple.
