Couples Paragliding in Pokhara: Everything You Need to Know

A complete guide to tandem paragliding in Pokhara for couples, including operators, pricing, safety, and what to expect in the air.

Pokhara is consistently ranked among the top paragliding destinations in the world, and tandem paragliding here has become one of the most popular couple activities in Nepal. The combination of thermals, mountain views, and the lake below creates a flight experience that is hard to match anywhere.

Why Pokhara is Ideal for Paragliding

The geography around Pokhara creates reliable thermal conditions. Flights launch from Sarangkot (1,592 m) and the thermals generated by the warm Pokhara valley allow experienced pilots to keep you aloft for 30-45 minutes on standard flights. The flight path takes you over Phewa Lake and the Annapurna foothills with Machhapuchhre dominating the horizon.

The landing zone is a flat grassy area in the Lakeside district, accessible on foot from most hotels. The approach over the lake with the city below is itself a highlight.

Tandem Paragliding Basics

In tandem paragliding, you are harnessed in front of a certified pilot who controls the glider. You need no prior experience. The pilot does all the work. Your only job is to run a few steps on takeoff and lift your feet on landing. Most people describe it as surprisingly smooth once airborne.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Weight limits apply: typically 15-110 kg per passenger. If either of you falls outside this range, confirm with the operator before booking.

What to Expect

You will be picked up from your hotel in a jeep and driven to the launch site at Sarangkot. At the launch area, the pilot fits your harness and gives a 5-minute briefing on takeoff and landing procedure. The takeoff itself takes about 5-10 steps into the wind. Once airborne, the pilot may perform gentle spirals if you request them.

Flight duration on a standard package is 30 minutes in the air. Premium or sunrise/sunset packages extend this to 45-60 minutes and are worth the additional cost for couples who want more time above the valley.

After landing, you will be returned to Lakeside. Photos and video are captured by a GoPro mounted on the wing frame and available for purchase.

Operators and Pricing

Sarangkot has dozens of paragliding companies. The market is competitive and prices are relatively standardised. A standard 30-minute tandem flight costs approximately USD 80-100 per person. Longer flights or performance flights with aerobatics cost USD 120-180 per person.

Book through established operators who are members of the Paragliding Association of Nepal. These companies employ certified pilots and use equipment maintained to international standards. Your hotel will typically have a relationship with a reputable operator and can arrange booking.

Some operators offer a couple discount when both partners book simultaneously. Ask explicitly.

Best Time of Day to Fly

Morning flights (8-11 am) are generally smoother as thermals are building rather than fully active. The mountain light is also excellent for photographs in the morning.

Afternoon flights (12-3 pm) have stronger thermals and a more dynamic ride. Experienced pilots can use these thermals to gain significant altitude and extend flight time.

Sunset flights (4-6 pm depending on season) are the most romantic option. The mountain glow at sunset combined with the bird's-eye view of Phewa Lake creates an exceptional visual experience. Book these well in advance as availability is limited.

Safety Considerations

Paragliding in Pokhara has an excellent safety record when using established operators. The main risks relate to weather changes. Flights are cancelled or delayed when conditions are unsuitable. Do not pressure your pilot to fly in marginal conditions.

Weather in Pokhara can change quickly. If you are planning a flight on a specific day, have a backup day in your itinerary in case the morning is cloudy. Most operators will reschedule at no charge for weather cancellations.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothes. Loose scarves or jackets can get tangled in equipment. Closed shoes are essential. Bring sunglasses and apply sunscreen before the flight. It is windier at altitude than on the ground, even on warm days.

Do not bring large bags or valuables. Most launch sites have a secure area where you can leave belongings while airborne.
