Cheap SIM Cards in Nepal: Getting Affordable Data and Calls

Mobile data in Nepal is affordable and widely available. Here is how to buy a local SIM card, what the main operators offer, and how to keep data costs minimal.

Getting a local SIM card in Nepal is one of the best budget decisions a traveler can make. Local data rates are far cheaper than international roaming, and mobile connectivity is surprisingly good in most urban and trekking areas.

Main Mobile Operators

Nepal has two main mobile operators for travelers:

Ncell: The dominant private operator with the widest 4G coverage, particularly in urban areas and popular tourist routes. Better coverage in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Nepal Telecom (NT): The government-operated carrier with strong coverage in remote and rural areas, including some high-altitude trekking zones where Ncell signal is absent.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Many experienced trekkers carry SIM cards from both operators to maximize coverage on remote routes.

Where to Buy

  • Tribhuvan International Airport (Arrivals): Both Ncell and Nepal Telecom have counters in the arrivals hall. Prices are standard (not inflated) and the process is straightforward.
  • Thamel shops and official operator stores: Widely available. Ensure you buy from an official operator store or a reputable reseller rather than from street sellers.
  • Local mobile shops throughout Nepal: Ncell and NT SIMs are available across the country.

What You Need to Register

Nepal requires SIM card registration with a passport copy. The shop will handle this process. Bring your passport or a clear photo of the ID page.

Cost Overview

SIM card purchase (starter pack): NPR 100-200, often includes some initial balance.

  • 15 GB / 28 days: NPR 350-600
  • 50 GB / 30 days: NPR 700-1,000

Nepal Telecom packages (approximate):

Coverage on Trekking Routes

  • Annapurna Circuit and ABC: Ncell signal to moderate altitudes, NT better at higher points
  • Everest Base Camp route: Both operators have signal to Namche Bazaar; NT often better from Namche upward
  • Langtang: Intermittent signal on both networks
  • Remote areas: Expect complete signal loss in high valleys

Wi-Fi Calling and Data Tips

Use data for WhatsApp, Messenger, and voice/video calls rather than paying per-minute call rates. Most travelers find a data-only SIM package perfectly adequate for staying in touch with family and using maps.
