Taking the Bus from Nepal to India: Routes, Borders, and Tips

Direct buses run between Kathmandu and major Indian cities — here's what the overland crossing by road actually looks like.

Overview

Overland travel between Nepal and India is popular, affordable, and offers a slower, more immersive experience than flying. Multiple border crossings connect the two countries, with the busiest being Sunauli/Bhairahawa, Raxaul/Birgunj, Kakarbhitta/Panitanki, and Nepalgunj/Rupaidiha. Direct tourist buses run between Kathmandu and Pokhara to Indian cities including Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kolkata, and Delhi.

Main Routes

Kathmandu to Varanasi via Sunauli: approximately 12-14 hours. Kathmandu to Delhi via Sunauli: 24-30 hours (often with a break in Gorakhpur or Lucknow). Pokhara to Sunauli border: 5-6 hours. Kathmandu to Kolkata via Kakarbhitta: 20-24 hours. Night buses are standard on longer routes — bring a sleep mask, earplugs, and warm layers as air conditioning is typically very cold.

Border Crossing Process

At the Nepal-India border you must: exit Nepal immigration (have your passport stamped and obtain an exit clearance), walk or take a rickshaw across the border zone, and enter India immigration (obtain a visa stamp if required, or register as an Indian national). The process usually takes 30-90 minutes but can stretch longer at busy crossings. Keep all your luggage with you throughout.

Booking Buses

Greenline Tourist Bus and Sakar Tours are the most reputable operators for Nepal-India routes with air-conditioned coaches. Book in advance through agents in Thamel or Lakeside Pokhara. Government-operated Sajha buses also run some cross-border routes at lower cost but with less comfort. Avoid unbranded bus offers from random touts.

FAQ

Q: Do I need an Indian visa before reaching the border?

Citizens of most countries (including US, EU, UK, Australia) can obtain an India e-visa online before travel — apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before crossing. Citizens of eligible countries can also obtain a visa on arrival at certain Indian airports but NOT at land borders. Apply online before crossing by land.

Q: Is the Sunauli-Gorakhpur road safe and comfortable?

The road is paved and the crossing is established and routine. The area around the border town of Sunauli is bustling and can feel chaotic but is generally safe. Keep your bags close, decline assistance from unofficial porters, and proceed directly to the immigration counters.

Q: Can I take a taxi instead of a bus for Nepal-India crossings?

Yes. Shared taxis run between Kathmandu/Pokhara and border towns. Private taxis can be hired for the full route to Indian cities but are significantly more expensive. Some travelers combine bus to the border and then Indian rail or bus onwards for the best value.
