Budget Food Guide to Pokhara: Eating Well Without the Lakeside Markup

Pokhara's lakeside restaurants are convenient but expensive. Here is how to find excellent food at genuinely local prices across the city.

Pokhara's lakeside restaurant strip is pleasant and convenient, but prices at tourist-facing restaurants are noticeably inflated. Knowing where locals eat โ€” and what to order โ€” dramatically reduces your daily food spend without sacrificing quality.

The Lakeside Markup

Restaurants fronting the main lakeside promenade charge tourist prices as a rule. A plate of food (momos, pasta, pizza, dal bhat) typically costs NPR 400-900. The same dish at a local restaurant one or two streets back from the tourist strip costs NPR 150-350. The food is often identical or better โ€” local cooks are not trying to replicate Western food at questionable quality, they are cooking what they know.

Where to Eat Like a Local

Old Bazaar area: Pokhara's old market district (Bagar, around the Bindhyabasini Temple area) has excellent local restaurants. Dal bhat sets here cost NPR 150-250.

Mustang Chowk: The roundabout connecting several directions in central Pokhara has local food stalls and small restaurants popular with students and workers. Prices are genuinely local.

Momos in Pokhara

Pokhara has an excellent momo culture with dozens of dedicated momo restaurants. These range from basic plastic-stool stalls (NPR 100-150 per plate) to mid-range momo restaurants (NPR 200-300). The quality at local momo stalls is often indistinguishable from or better than tourist restaurants.

Fresh Fruit

Pokhara's market has excellent and affordable fresh fruit. Seasonal fruits โ€” bananas, papayas, mangoes, guavas โ€” cost NPR 80-150 per kilogram. A bag of fruit makes a cheap and nutritious breakfast or trail snack.
