The Sauraha Village Advantage

Sauraha is the gateway town for Chitwan and sits directly adjacent to the park boundary. It has dozens of budget guesthouses and locally-run safari operations that offer the same access to the park as luxury lodges at a fraction of the price. Staying in Sauraha rather than inside or adjacent to the park boundary cuts accommodation costs from NPR 5,000-20,000 (lodge rates) to NPR 600-1,500 (guesthouse rates).

Park Entry Fees

Elephant safari (community elephant centers): Varies. The community-based elephant programs in Sauraha offer interactions that are considered more ethical than older commercial elephant riding operations.

Bicycle ride: Renting a bicycle (NPR 150-300 per day) and cycling the buffer zone paths around the park boundary is free and surprisingly productive for bird and wildlife spotting.
