Bhaktapur Hotels: Sleeping in Nepal's Best-Preserved Medieval City

Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of Kathmandu Valley's three Durbar Squares and has excellent small guesthouses within the old city walls. Staying here after day visitors leave is transformative.

Overview

Bhaktapur, 13 km east of Kathmandu, is the valley's most atmospheric medieval city and the one most worth sleeping in overnight. After the day-tripper crowds thin out at 5 pm, Bhaktapur becomes remarkably peaceful -- potters on Pottery Square continue throwing clay, children play in the narrow alleys, and the temples are illuminated by lantern light. The UNESCO entry fee (NPR 1,500 for foreigners, valid 5 days) is waived for registered hotel guests within the historic city.

Accommodation Options

Bhadgaon Guest House (Taumadhi Square) is the standout property -- a converted Newari house directly overlooking Taumadhi Square and the Nyatapola Pagoda. Rates from NPR 3,500 (small rooms) to NPR 6,500 (Nyatapola-view rooms). The rooftop restaurant with pagoda views is exceptional at sunrise.

Bhaktapur Guest House (near Durbar Square) has 20 rooms from NPR 2,500. Simple but well-maintained, with an attentive family management. Located two minutes' walk from the Golden Gate entrance.

Pagoda Guest House (Tachupal Tole) is budget-friendly at NPR 1,800 to 2,500, near the Dattatreya Temple in the eastern quarter -- the quietest part of the old city.

What to Do After Sundown

The evening in Bhaktapur is the real reward for staying overnight. Walk the pottery district at Suryamadhi, watch the evening Aarti prayer ceremony at Changu Narayan (30-minute walk from Bhaktapur), and dine on local juju dhau (king yoghurt) and bara (lentil patties) at a street-side kitchen near Pottery Square.

FAQ

Is it necessary to pay the UNESCO entry fee if staying overnight in Bhaktapur?
No. Show your hotel booking confirmation at the main city gate and the NPR 1,500 fee is waived for the duration of your stay. Keep your accommodation receipt.

How far is Bhaktapur from Kathmandu Airport?
Approximately 15 km, typically 30 to 45 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. A Sajilo cab from the airport directly to Bhaktapur costs approximately NPR 800 to 1,200.

Are there restaurants in Bhaktapur open for dinner?
Yes, though the selection is more limited than Thamel. The restaurants around Taumadhi Square serve excellent local thali sets (NPR 400 to 700) and the rooftop cafes stay open until 9 pm.
