Overview

Kathmandu spreads across a wide valley and has distinct neighbourhoods, each with a different character and a different relationship to the city's sights. Most first-time visitors default to Thamel, which is convenient but loud. A better choice depends on your travel style, budget, and what you plan to do.

Thamel

Thamel is the most-visited and most convenient neighbourhood for travellers. Its concentration of guesthouses, restaurants, gear shops, and tour operators makes it the logical base for anyone doing a Himalayan trek or exploring the valley on a short trip. The downside is noise โ€” traffic, generators, and nightlife make Thamel one of the louder places in the city, particularly in the central lanes. Choose accommodation on the quieter northern edge (Paknajol) or the southern approach towards Chhetrapati for better sleep.

Patan (Lalitpur)

Staying in Patan gives you immediate access to the finest Durbar Square in the valley, quieter streets, and a genuinely local residential atmosphere. The Kopundol and Jawalakhel areas have several excellent mid-range and boutique hotels within walking distance of the square. Patan's restaurant scene is arguably better than Thamel's at the mid to upper range. It is about 25 minutes by taxi from the international airport and 20 minutes from Thamel.

Boudhanath Area

Staying near Boudhanath is ideal for those interested in Tibetan Buddhism โ€” you can attend morning and evening koras without commuting. The neighbourhood is calmer than Thamel, with good rooftop cafes and several excellent guesthouses. The trade-off is distance from Durbar Square and the old city.

Baluwatar and Lazimpat

These northern neighbourhoods are quieter, more residential, and home to many embassies, NGOs, and upscale restaurants. Hotels here tend to be mid-range to upscale with more space and garden areas. They suit business travellers and those wanting a calmer base from which to make day trips.

Jhamsikhel and Sanepa

These southern neighbourhoods border Patan and are popular with the expat community. Accommodation options are more limited but prices are lower, and the area has some of Kathmandu's best international restaurants and coffee shops.

FAQ

Which area is best for a first visit to Kathmandu?
Thamel is the most practical for a first visit, particularly if you are connecting to a trek. If you have more time and want a calmer experience, northern Thamel (Paknajol) or Patan are better choices.

Is it easy to get from Patan to Thamel?
Yes. A taxi between Patan and Thamel takes 20-30 minutes and costs NPR 300-500 depending on traffic. The two are easily combined as day trip destinations from either base.
