Best Areas to Stay in Kathmandu: A Neighbourhood Guide
Kathmandu offers several distinct neighbourhoods for accommodation, each with a different atmosphere and set of trade-offs. This guide helps you choose the area that suits your travel style.
Thamel
Thamel is the default choice for most first-time visitors โ and for good reason. It has the widest selection of accommodation, the densest concentration of restaurants and services, and easy access to trekking agencies. The downside is noise and a distinctly commercialised atmosphere that can feel far removed from actual Kathmandu life. Best for: trekkers, first-timers, budget travellers.
Patan (Lalitpur)
Patan sits across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu and has its own ancient durbar square, craft workshops, and a much calmer pace than Thamel. Accommodation options are fewer but include some genuinely special heritage hotels set in restored Newari courtyard houses. The neighbourhood is excellent for those interested in art, architecture, and craft traditions. Best for: culture-focused travellers, repeat visitors to Nepal.
Boudha (Boudhanath)
Boudha is the centre of Kathmandu's Tibetan Buddhist community and is built around the enormous Boudhanath Stupa. Monasteries, thangka painting studios, and Tibetan restaurants line the circular road around the stupa. Accommodation here is quieter and more residential than Thamel. Best for: meditation and spiritual retreats, travellers interested in Tibetan Buddhism.
Baluwatar and Lazimpat
These leafy residential districts north of Thamel house many embassies, international organisations, and some well-regarded mid-range and upmarket hotels. Streets are wider, traffic is lighter, and the atmosphere is considerably calmer. A short taxi or ride to Thamel and the old city makes the location practical. Best for: business travellers, families, those who prioritise a quiet room.

Durbar Marg
Durbar Marg is Kathmandu's upscale boulevard, lined with airline offices, travel agencies, banks, and the highest concentration of five-star properties. Several internationally branded hotels and a few well-managed independent luxury hotels operate here. Best for: luxury travellers, those on short business visits.
Swayambhu
The area near Swayambhunath Stupa (the Monkey Temple) on the western hill has a small number of guesthouses. The hilltop location means excellent valley views and a cooler breeze but requires a short taxi or uphill walk from central Kathmandu. Best for: those who want a quieter base with a bit of altitude.
Practical Distances
Most Kathmandu attractions are within five kilometres of Thamel. Rickshaws, taxis, and ride-hailing apps serve all areas. Traffic in central Kathmandu can be severe during morning and evening rush hours โ build extra travel time into any schedule.
