Bardia Safari Lodge Guide: Nepal's Wild West

Bardia National Park in far-western Nepal is the country's largest protected area and its best-kept wildlife secret. This guide covers accommodation options from simple guesthouses to premium jungle lodges.

Why Bardia?

Bardia National Park covers 968 square kilometres of riverine forest along the Karnali and Babai rivers. It is less visited than Chitwan but has a higher density of Bengal tigers and equally impressive populations of one-horned rhinos, wild elephants, and Gangetic dolphins. Visitor numbers remain low enough that morning safaris feel genuinely wild โ€” you may go hours without seeing another vehicle.

The nearest town is Thakurdwara on the park's eastern boundary, a small community that has grown around tourism and conservation work. Getting here requires a long bus or domestic flight journey from Kathmandu โ€” the remoteness is part of the appeal.

Accommodation Options

Thakurdwara guesthouses: The town has a handful of basic guesthouses and simple lodges charging NPR 1,000 to 3,000 per night for a double room. These suit budget travellers who want to self-organise safaris with local guides. Facilities are basic but functional.

Community-run lodges: Several lodges in Thakurdwara are operated by local community groups under the buffer zone management programme. These provide better infrastructure than the cheapest guesthouses while ensuring that profits remain in the community. Room rates NPR 2,500 to 5,000 with meals.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Premium jungle lodges: A small number of high-quality private lodges operate in the Bardia buffer zone. These include properties with private gardens adjacent to forest corridors, open-air dining, naturalist-led safaris, river fishing, and multi-day walking safari options. Rates range from USD 150 to 350 per person per night on a full-board basis.

Safari Activities

Walking safaris with armed park rangers are Bardia's signature activity and offer a level of immersion impossible from a vehicle. Jeep safaris cover more ground and are better for early morning tiger tracking. Canoe trips on the Karnali River provide exceptional bird watching and occasional dolphin sightings. Elephant habitat surveys, conducted with park staff and researchers, are available at some lodges as a premium activity.

Getting to Bardia

The most convenient route is a direct bus from Kathmandu to Ambassa or Chisapani (12 to 14 hours) then a short jeep ride to Thakurdwara. Alternatively, fly to Nepalgunj (one hour from Kathmandu) and take a taxi or bus the remaining 90 kilometres to the park. Domestic flights to Nepalgunj operate daily.

FAQ

What is the best time to visit Bardia?
October through April. February and March offer the best tiger sightings as the grass dries and thins. Avoid the monsoon (June to September) when flooding makes much of the park inaccessible.

Are Bardia safaris guided independently or through the lodge?
Both options exist. Lodges organise their own guided safaris. Independent travellers can hire registered guides from the park office. Lodge safaris are generally higher quality because the naturalist knows the resident animals' territories.
