Bandipur: Nepal's Most Romantic Hill Town
Why Bandipur is Nepal's best-kept romantic secret, and how to visit this preserved Newari hilltop town between Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Bandipur sits on a ridge at 1,030 metres between Kathmandu and Pokhara, overlooking the Marsyangdi Valley. The town is one of the most complete surviving examples of Newari trading town architecture in Nepal, and the absence of motorised vehicles in the central bazaar creates a quiet, timeless atmosphere that makes it particularly romantic.
What Makes Bandipur Romantic
Bandipur works because of what it lacks. No honking taxis, no motorbikes on the main lane, no loud music from trekking gear shops. The single main bazaar street is wide, paved with stone, and lined with two-storey Newari buildings with carved wooden windows. In the evening, the street empties of day visitors and the overnight guests have the town largely to themselves.
The ridge location means mountain views to the north toward Himalchuli (7,893 m), Baudha Himal, and the Annapurna massif. On clear mornings, the panorama is outstanding.
Getting There
Bandipur is 144 kilometres from Kathmandu and 36 kilometres from Pokhara. It sits just off the Prithvi Highway, the main Kathmandu-Pokhara road.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
By private car from Kathmandu: 4-5 hours. Turn off the Prithvi Highway at Dumre and drive 8 kilometres up the ridge road.
By bus from Kathmandu: Take any Pokhara-bound bus and alight at Dumre. Local jeeps run from Dumre up to Bandipur every hour or so. Total time: 5-6 hours.
From Pokhara: 1-1.5 hours by private car. An easy half-day trip or an excellent stop on the Kathmandu-Pokhara drive.
Staying Overnight
The overnight experience is essential for a romantic Bandipur visit. The day visitors who come for a few hours from Pokhara leave by mid-afternoon, and the town takes on a different, quieter character.
Old Inn Bandipur: The most atmospheric property in the town, occupying a restored 200-year-old Newari building. The rooms use traditional materials and the views from the upper floor balconies are excellent. Rates: NPR 3,000-5,000 per night.
Bandipur Mountain Resort: A modern property on the ridge with mountain-facing rooms and a garden. More comfortable than the Old Inn but less atmospheric.
Walking the Bazaar
The main bazaar is a single wide lane running east-west along the ridge. Walk it in the early morning when vendors are setting up and the light is on the carved building facades. Walk it again in the evening as the sun drops behind the hills.
Bindhyabasini Temple at the eastern end of the bazaar is the town's principal temple. The courtyard is active and the temple architecture is representative of the Newari religious building tradition.
Views and Hikes
Thani Mai Temple: A 30-minute walk uphill from the bazaar leads to this viewpoint temple. The 360-degree view from here is the widest in the area, taking in the full Himalayan arc to the north and the Marsyangdi Valley below.
Siddha Gufa (Cave): A 45-minute walk down from the bazaar leads to one of Nepal's largest caves, home to thousands of horseshoe bats. The cave exploration takes 1-2 hours with a guide.
Ridgeline walk: A walking path runs along the full length of the ridge through forest and past viewpoints. The section between Bandipur and the Khudi viewpoint to the west takes about 2 hours and offers continuous mountain perspectives.
Dining
The restaurant options in Bandipur are limited but adequate. The Old Inn restaurant is the most reliable for traditional Nepali food. Several small teahouses on the main bazaar serve simple meals.
Bandipur is not a place to visit for the food. It is a place to visit for the atmosphere, the architecture, and the mountains. Eat simply and focus on the setting.
When to Visit
October-November and February-April are best. The monsoon (June-August) brings mist and rain that can obscure the mountain views and make walking trails slippery. Winter is cold but clear, and the mountain views can be exceptional in December-January.
