Bandipur Heritage Hotels: Nepal's Most Perfectly Preserved Hill Town
Bandipur is a traffic-free Newari hilltop town between Pokhara and Kathmandu that has preserved its 18th-century architecture completely. Its small hotels offer some of Nepal's most atmospheric stays.
Overview
Bandipur, perched at 1,030 m above sea level on a ridge above the Marsyangdi Valley between Kathmandu and Pokhara, is arguably the best-preserved traditional Newari town in Nepal. The main bazaar street is traffic-free -- vehicles are prohibited from entering -- creating a pedestrian environment of 18th and 19th-century brick merchant houses that is completely unique in Nepal. Its small collection of heritage hotels makes it an excellent overnight stop on the Kathmandu-Pokhara journey.
Where to Stay
Old Inn Bandipur is the flagship property -- a meticulously restored Newari merchant house at the centre of the main bazaar. 18 rooms from NPR 4,500 to 8,500, all with exposed wood-beam ceilings, traditional clay-rendered walls, and original carved windows. The rooftop has views south over the Marsyangdi Valley and north to the Himalayan Range including Annapurna and Manaslu on clear days.
Bandipur Panorama Guest House offers simpler rooms from NPR 2,500 with mountain views from the front terrace. Family-run with good home-cooked dal bhat available through the evening.
Gaun Ghar Bandipur (Village House) is a community homestay collective -- rooms from NPR 1,500, meals included with local families. An excellent way to engage with Newari domestic life.

What Makes Bandipur Special
The Thani Mai Temple on the northern edge of town has views across the Marsyangdi Valley to Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna Range. The Mahalaxmi Cave system below town (guided tours, 1.5 hours, NPR 300 entry) has stalagmites and stalactites. Dawn in Bandipur -- the light touching the mustard-yellow facades of the bazaar buildings -- is one of Nepal's great photographic moments.
FAQ
How do I get to Bandipur from Kathmandu or Pokhara?
Take any Pokhara-bound bus to Dumre junction on the Prithvi Highway (3.5 hours from Kathmandu, NPR 300). From Dumre, a shared jeep climbs 8 km to Bandipur (NPR 150). Or book a Sajilo cab from Pokhara directly to Bandipur (90 minutes, approximately NPR 2,500).
Is Bandipur suitable for older travellers or those with mobility issues?
The main bazaar street is flat and paved. Some guesthouses have steep internal staircases. The town is entirely walkable without major gradients. The Thani Mai Temple hike (20 minutes uphill) is moderately strenuous.
Are there restaurants in Bandipur beyond hotel dining?
Yes. Two independent restaurants on the main bazaar street serve momos, dal bhat, and continental options. The total dining scene is small but sufficient for a one-night stay.
