Annapurna Sanctuary Trek for Couples
A detailed guide to the Annapurna Base Camp trek for couples, including route stages, accommodation, and what makes this route uniquely romantic.
The Annapurna Sanctuary trek leads couples into one of the most dramatic mountain amphitheatres on earth. The final approach to Annapurna Base Camp, where you emerge from the Modi Khola gorge into a bowl surrounded by eight mountains above 7,000 metres, is an experience that leaves most trekkers speechless.
The Route
The standard ABC (Annapurna Base Camp) trek starts from Nayapul or Phedi near Pokhara and typically takes 10-14 days round trip. The main route passes through:
- Tikhedhunga (1,540 m)
- Ghorepani (2,860 m) โ classic sunrise viewpoint
- Tadapani (2,630 m) โ rhododendron forests
- Chomrong (2,170 m) โ the gateway village to the sanctuary
- Himalaya Hotel (2,920 m)
- Dovan (2,600 m)
- Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m)
The ascent from Chomrong to ABC passes through the Modi Khola gorge, a narrow valley flanked by Hiunchuli (6,441 m) and Machhapuchhre (6,993 m). The gorge is prone to avalanche in certain seasons, and the trail is closed when risk is high.
Why It Is Romantic
The ABC trek has a natural arc that builds toward a climax. Each day brings the mountains closer. The gorge section creates genuine drama as the valley walls close in. Then the trail opens suddenly into the sanctuary: a flat cirque of glacial moraine completely surrounded by peaks including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), and Hiunchuli (6,441 m).
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Spending a night at ABC means watching the sunset turn these peaks orange and the sunrise illuminate them from total darkness. The silence at 4,130 metres, broken only by wind and occasional distant avalanches, is profound.
Accommodation
Teahouses operate all along the route. The quality improves each year as the route becomes more popular. Chomrong has some of the best teahouses on the trek with attached bathrooms and reasonable food menus. Higher up at Himalaya Hotel and Deurali, the options are simpler but functional.
At ABC itself, several teahouses cluster at the base camp area. Accommodation is basic and cold at altitude. Sleeping bags or heavy blankets provided by teahouses are essential from Deurali upward.
Best Season
October-November and March-April are the prime seasons. The post-monsoon October sky is particularly clear. March brings rhododendron blossoms on the lower slopes that create spectacular pink and red colour in the forests between Ghorepani and Chomrong.
Avoid the monsoon months (June-August) due to trail mudslides, leeches, and frequent cloud cover that obscures the mountains. The sanctuary route above Chomrong is particularly prone to monsoon hazard.
Physical Requirements
The trek involves significant daily elevation gain and loss. Total elevation at ABC is 4,130 metres, which is high enough for altitude sickness to affect anyone. Plan rest days and ascend slowly above Chomrong. The typical acclimatisation approach is to avoid gaining more than 500 metres of sleeping altitude per day above 3,000 metres.
Fit couples who exercise regularly will find this trek demanding but very manageable with proper pacing.
Permits
The ABC trek requires two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) at NPR 3,000 per person and the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card at NPR 2,000 per person (independent trekkers). Both are available at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or at the permit checkpoint in Pokhara.
