Accommodation Zones in Pokhara: Where to Stay

A practical guide to Pokhara's main accommodation zones — Lakeside, Damside, the old city, and outside the centre — with the pros and cons of each.

Overview

Pokhara's accommodation market covers a wide range from budget guesthouses and hostels to mid-range trekker hotels and a small number of boutique and luxury properties. The city's accommodation is geographically clustered in a few distinct zones, each with different characteristics. Choosing the right zone depends on your priorities — lake proximity, quietness, budget, or access to local life.

Lakeside (Baidam)

The most popular zone for international visitors. Lakeside runs along the eastern shore of Phewa Lake for about 3 kilometres. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses in the back lanes to comfortable mid-range hotels with lake-view balconies. The area is walkable, social, and has the densest concentration of restaurants and services. Downside: it can be noisy until midnight or later in the peak season. Prices are higher than equivalent properties in other parts of the city.

Best for: First-time visitors, social travellers, those who want proximity to the lake and trekking services.

Damside (Pame)

At the southern end of Lakeside, Damside is slightly quieter and more spread out. It borders the lake's southern outlet and has some properties with garden or lake views. It is walking distance from central Lakeside but slightly removed from the main commercial strip.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Best for: Travellers who want Lakeside proximity with less noise; good budget options available.

Sarangkot Village

Staying in the village above the viewpoint gives you waking-up-at-the-viewpoint convenience. A small number of guesthouses operate here. The atmosphere is rural and quiet. The trade-off is distance from Lakeside's restaurants and shops.

Best for: Those who specifically want to wake up at the viewpoint and have a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path stay.

Prithvi Chowk and City Centre

The central urban area of Pokhara, about 3 kilometres from Lakeside. Hotels here are used primarily by Nepali business travellers and domestic tourists. Good value, authentic local atmosphere. Less convenient for the Phewa Lake experience.

Best for: Travellers wanting proximity to the bus park, cheaper options, or a more local-facing experience.

Highway and Resort Properties

A small number of resort-style properties are located on the outskirts of Pokhara in more rural settings, some with private gardens, pools, and mountain views not obstructed by neighbouring buildings. These require private transport or taxi for every outing.

Best for: Couples or honeymooners seeking privacy; longer stays where a base outside the bustle suits the itinerary.

FAQ

Q: Should I book in advance?

During October and November peak season, booking at least 1 week ahead is strongly advised, especially for mid-range and upscale properties. During off-peak months, walk-in accommodation is usually available.

Q: Is there accommodation in Pokhara catering specifically to families?

Yes. Several hotels in Lakeside have family rooms (two bedrooms connected or larger suites). Resort properties on the outskirts tend to have more garden space suitable for children.
