Winter trekking in Nepal is the road less travelled — and for good reason, but also with good rewards. The skies are among the clearest of any season, and trail crowds disappear almost entirely.

Winter (December-February) brings low temperatures above 3,500m, possible snow above 4,000m, and shorter daylight hours. Passes like Thorong La (5,416m) and Larkya La (5,160m) can close with heavy snowfall for days. However, lower-altitude treks (Poon Hill, Langtang Valley, Mardi Himal base, Helambu) operate normally with cold but dry conditions and utterly clear mountain views.
