Winter Trekking Nepal: What No One Tells You
December to February in Nepal offers crystal skies, empty trails, and dramatic snowscapes. The challenges are real but manageable with the right information.
Winter trekking in Nepal is the road less travelled โ and for good reason, but also with good rewards. The skies are among the clearest of any season, and trail crowds disappear almost entirely.
Overview
Winter (December-February) brings low temperatures above 3,500m, possible snow above 4,000m, and shorter daylight hours. Passes like Thorong La (5,416m) and Larkya La (5,160m) can close with heavy snowfall for days. However, lower-altitude treks (Poon Hill, Langtang Valley, Mardi Himal base, Helambu) operate normally with cold but dry conditions and utterly clear mountain views. EBC and Annapurna Circuit are possible in winter for experienced, well-equipped trekkers but require flexibility and patience for pass closures. Book your Nepal trip arrival transport through Sajilo to arrive at your Kathmandu hotel rested before hitting the cold trail the next morning.
Getting There
Same access routes as other seasons. Lukla flights in December-February are often more reliable than in monsoon โ cold clear air means good visibility windows. The main risk is snow on high passes rather than weather at the airports.
Key Highlights
Winter light at high altitude is extraordinary โ low-angle golden hour light on Himalayan peaks for hours each morning and evening. Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla looks particularly dramatic with snow on surrounding hills. Kyanjin Gompa in Langtang Valley (3,870m) is surrounded by snow from December onward โ a beautiful and rarely-photographed winter scene.

FAQ
Is EBC open in winter? The trail is not formally closed, but Gorakshep lodges reduce services and temperatures at Kalapathar can reach -25ยฐC overnight. Only experienced cold-weather trekkers should attempt EBC in January.
What treks work best in winter? Lower-altitude options: Ghorepani Poon Hill, Mardi Himal (to High Camp), Chisapani-Nagarkot, Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa. All deliver winter conditions without extreme cold exposure.
Are guide rates cheaper in winter? Yes โ rates drop 15-25% in December-February as demand falls. Porters may be harder to find in some regions.
