Western Nepal Travel Guide
Western Nepal — the Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces — is the country's least visited and most dramatically remote region, home to Rara Lake, Shey Phoksundo, and mountain cultures unchanged for centuries.
Why Western Nepal?
The western third of Nepal receives perhaps 5% of the country's tourist visits despite containing landscapes and cultures as extraordinary as anything in the more travelled east. The reasons are practical: infrastructure is thinner, roads are longer, and flights to the remote airstrips are small and weather-dependent. These same factors are also the reasons to go.
Rara Lake
Rara is Nepal's largest and deepest lake, sitting at 2,990m in a high valley of the Karnali Province, surrounded by pine and birch forest. The lake's colour shifts through shades of blue and turquoise through the day, reflecting the encircling forest and the mountains above. The Rara National Park that surrounds it is one of Nepal's least visited, home to red panda, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, and wolves.
Access is by small aircraft to Talcha Airport from Nepalgunj, followed by a 1-2 hour walk to the lake. October and November give the clearest skies and the first dustings of snow on the surrounding hills.
Shey Phoksundo
The Shey Phoksundo Lake in Dolpa district is arguably Nepal's most dramatic: a turquoise lake at 3,612m in the rain-shadow zone north of the Himalaya. The Phoksundo area borders the restricted Shey Gompa circuit. Access is by the 9-day trek from Juphal or the shorter route via Juphal from Nepalgunj.
Planning this trip? 🎒
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Humla and Simikot
Humla is Nepal's most remote district, accessible only by small aircraft to Simikot and then on foot. The Karnali River here is a major trade route to Tibet. The landscape is high desert with ancient Bon and Buddhist monastery culture distinct from other northern districts.
Surkhet as a Base
Surkhet (Birendranagar) is the most practical base for western Nepal access. Flights from Kathmandu land daily. Onward flights to Jumla and Simikot connect through Surkhet or Nepalgunj. The city has adequate accommodation and has improved significantly in the past decade.
Sajilo operates in Nepalgunj and Surkhet to assist with the urban transport links between flights and bus connections in these western hub cities.
Practical Notes
Western Nepal requires flexible scheduling. Mountain flight cancellations due to weather are common and should be planned for with buffer days. The infrastructure improvement pace in the Karnali region is accelerating but remote still means remote.
FAQ
Is western Nepal suitable for first-time Nepal visitors?
It rewards those with some Nepal travel experience. The logistics are complex and the amenities basic. A first visit to Nepal is better started in the Kathmandu Valley or Pokhara region.
What permits are needed for western Nepal?
Rara National Park requires a National Park entry permit (available in Kathmandu). Shey Phoksundo requires a Dolpa permit. Restricted Area Permits are needed for Inner Dolpa. Consult a trekking agency for current requirements.
What is the best season for western Nepal?
October-November and May-June. Winter closes the high passes. Monsoon brings heavy rain to the southern routes though the rain-shadow areas stay drier.
