Upper Mustang Trek: The Forbidden Kingdom Complete Guide

Upper Mustang was closed to outsiders until 1992. This Tibetan plateau kingdom north of Lo Manthang (3,840m) requires a special permit and a licensed guide — and rewards with ancient cave cities, monasteries, and a lunar landscape unlike anywhere else in Nepal.

Upper Mustang is one of the last places on Earth where traditional Tibetan culture survives intact — a walled kingdom that was closed to outsiders until 1992 and still requires a special permit costing USD 500 per 10 days.

Overview

  • Duration: 10–14 days from Jomsom
  • Max altitude: 3,840m (Lo Manthang) to 4,300m (high passes)
  • Difficulty: Moderate — the terrain is relatively flat (Tibetan plateau)
  • Permit: USD 500 per 10 days (mandatory), plus Annapurna Conservation Area Permit

Best Time to Visit

May–June and September–October are the best windows. The region is in the rain shadow — even monsoon season is trekable, making this one of Nepal's best monsoon destinations.

Key Highlights

Lo Manthang — the walled capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang. Ancient cave cities carved into cliff faces throughout the valley. Thousands of sky caves (manmade cliff dwellings) dating back 2,000–3,000 years. Buddhist festivals including Tiji (usually April–May).

Getting to Upper Mustang

The standard approach is Kathmandu → Pokhara by bus or plane → Jomsom by flight (25 min) or trek. Upper Mustang begins north of Kagbeni (2,810m).

Practical Tips

Guide mandatory. Minimum 2 trekkers required (or hire guide as second). The terrain is high-altitude desert — sun protection is critical. Nights in Lo Manthang drop well below freezing even in summer.

FAQ

Why is Upper Mustang a restricted area? It borders Tibet — the permit controls traffic and protects the fragile Tibetan cultural heritage.

What is the King of Mustang's status now? Nepal abolished the monarchy in 2008, but the former king Jigme Palbar Bista still lives in Lo Manthang and is respected as a cultural figurehead.

Is Upper Mustang altitude dangerous? The elevation is moderate (3,000–4,300m) compared to EBC — AMS risk is lower, but altitude awareness is still necessary.
