Tsum Valley Buddhist Trek Guide
Tsum Valley is a restricted Himalayan sanctuary north of the Manaslu Circuit, home to an ancient Buddhist community that has maintained unbroken Tibetan traditions for centuries.
Tsum Valley (or Tsum Tsum) is a hidden valley north of the Manaslu Conservation Area, accessed via a branch trail from Lokpa on the Manaslu Circuit. The Tsum people practice an ancient form of Nyingma Buddhism.
Overview
The trek typically adds 7-10 days to the Manaslu Circuit: Lokpa–Chumling–Chhekampar–Nile–Mu Gompa (3,700m) and return. Mu Gompa is the valley most sacred monastery, perched above a ridge with views of Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal. The valley has been a restricted area since 2008 — permit costs USD 40 per week (September-November) or USD 20 (other months), in addition to the Manaslu Circuit restricted permit. Book your Kathmandu cab to the Gorkha jeep park with Sajilo at the start of your trek.
FAQ
Can I visit Tsum Valley without doing the Manaslu Circuit? The access trail begins on the Manaslu Circuit route, so in practice both permits are required. Some trekkers do a shorter Tsum-only route from Arughat, avoiding the full circuit.
Are there teahouses in Tsum Valley? A basic teahouse network exists in main villages including Chumling, Chhekampar, and near Mu Gompa. Accommodation is very simple — sleeping bags essential.
