The wrong boots will end your Nepal trek in blisters and ankle injuries. Here is what features actually matter for Himalayan trails, and how to break them in properly.

Nepal trekking terrain ranges from subtropical mud paths to rocky high-altitude moraines. One boot category covers the vast majority of trails โ€” knowing which saves you from a painful mistake.

Overview

Mid-cut or high-cut waterproof leather or synthetic boots with a stiff midsole and aggressive lug sole are the standard for all major Nepal treks. Waterproofing (Gore-Tex or equivalent) matters most on lower-elevation trails where mud and stream crossings are constant. Above 4,500m on snow and ice, full-shank stiff boots are preferable. Brands consistently used by experienced Himalayan trekkers: Scarpa, La Sportiva, Salomon (lighter trails), Lowa, and Merrell Moab for easier routes. Whatever you buy, break them in for at least 100km before arriving in Nepal. Sajilo can drop you at your Kathmandu gear shop on arrival day so you have time to replace anything that does not feel right.

FAQ

Can I buy good boots in Kathmandu? Thamel has many gear shops with genuine and replica boots. Genuine branded boots at fair prices are available, but fit is harder to guarantee on trekking day 1 without prior break-in.

Do I need waterproof boots? Yes for most Nepal trails, especially below 3,000m in monsoon. Above the snowline, waterproofing matters less than stiffness.
