How to Pack Light for a Nepal Trek
Most Nepal trekkers carry 15-20% more than they need. A properly curated 7-8kg day pack makes every uphill easier and every teahouse arrival more comfortable.
The golden rule for Nepal trekking: if a porter is carrying your main bag, your day pack should be under 8kg. If you are carrying everything yourself, 10-12kg is the realistic maximum for multi-week comfort.
Overview
The heaviest items and where to trim: sleeping bag (use a 900g down bag rather than a 1.5kg synthetic), clothing (three base layers rotating rather than seven separate outfits), and footwear (one pair of trekking boots, one pair of camp sandals, nothing else). Leave behind: full-size towels (quick-dry travel towel weighs 200g vs 600g), physical guidebooks (PDF on your phone), and any clothing you have not worn for three consecutive days of packing at home. Teahouses provide blankets โ you may not need a sleeping bag liner if your bag is rated correctly. Pack your kit at home a week before departure and live out of it for a test weekend. Use Sajilo for the Kathmandu hotel-to-airport transfer so you are not wrestling your pack onto public transport.
