Tiji Festival Upper Mustang Complete Guide

Tiji is a three-day exorcism festival unique to Upper Mustang that re-enacts the defeat of a demon threatening the kingdom of Lo. It is one of the most remote and visually extraordinary festivals in the Himalayas.

Overview

Tiji (short for Tenchi) is held annually in Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Upper Mustang, on the 24th to 26th days of the third Tibetan lunar month โ€” usually falling in May. The festival depicts the story of Dorje Jono, a deity who defeats his demon father to save the kingdom of Lo from destruction. For three days, elaborately costumed monks from the Choede Monastery perform ritualised dances, musical ceremonies, and a concluding fire puja in the ancient palace square. The setting โ€” ochre mud walls, ancient cave dwellings, the snow-capped Himalayan barrier โ€” is unlike anywhere else in the world.

Getting There

Upper Mustang requires a Restricted Area Permit costing USD 500 per person for 10 days (additional days USD 50/day). This permit must be arranged through a registered trekking agency. Access is via Jomsom (fly from Pokhara) followed by a jeep or trek north through Kagbeni and Chele to Lo Manthang. The drive takes six to eight hours on rough mountain roads. Alternatively, trekkers walk the upper Mustang trail in five to six days from Kagbeni.

The Festival Experience

Lo Manthang has a population of around 1,000 in the main town, but during Tiji the plaza outside Choede Monastery fills with thousands of local Mustangi pilgrims, Tibetan visitors crossing from the north, and an increasing number of international travellers. The king of Lo (Lo Gyalpo) appears on the final day in ceremonial dress, which is one of the last occasions in Nepal where a traditional Himalayan king plays a public ritual role.

Accommodation in Lo Manthang is extremely limited โ€” around 300 beds in total. Book through your trekking agency at least six months in advance for Tiji dates.

Photography

Tiji offers extraordinary photography opportunities. The monks' costumes are vibrant against the white monastery walls and blue desert sky. A long lens (200-400mm) is useful for the dances. Ask permission before photographing in private spaces. The wind in Mustang is ferocious in May โ€” protect your equipment with a plastic bag inside your pack.
