Overview

Teej arrives in the Nepali month of Bhadra, usually in August or September, and transforms Nepal's streets into a sea of red. Women wear their finest red saris or kurtas, red being the color of marriage and Parvati, Shiva's consort. On the first evening, the Dar Khane Raat, women feast lavishly before the fast begins. The second day is spent fasting and bathing in rivers, especially at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, where thousands of women gather in red processions to bathe in the Bagmati. They sing and dance Teej songs, often irreverently funny folk lyrics about marriage, in-laws, and domestic life, late into the night. The third day, Rishi Panchami, involves ritual bathing with datiwan twigs as a purification ceremony. Teej is most fervently celebrated in Janakpur, the birthplace of Sita, where the streets are filled with women dancing in circles for days. For women travelers, joining a Teej celebration as a spectator is a rare window into Nepali women's social world.
